      Podcast Feed Updates

My last journal let you guys know that we made changes to our podcast distribution. This change affected the following audio podcasts:

      Dude Soup

      On The Spot

      The Patch

      Rooster Teeth Podcast

Most podcast aggregators have updated to the new feeds and are getting new episodes. If your podcast application is not updating here are the new updated feeds for those shows:

      Dude Soup:

      http://fun.haus/show/dude-soup/feed/mp3

      On The Spot:

      http://roosterteeth.com/show/on-the-spot/feed/mp3

      The Patch:

      http://theknow.tv/show/the-patch/feed/mp3

      Rooster Teeth Podcast:

      http://roosterteeth.com/show/rt-podcast/feed/mp3

If your podcast feed has not updated for a couple of weeks or if you heard the audio message informing you to come here for additional help, please leave a comment on this journal with what program/operating system/device you are using to access the podcast and I'll do my best to help you out. I'll also make edits at the end of this journal with common solutions and questions as they come up.

      --edit--

It seems quite a few people use Overcast and have questions about it. I'd never used that app before but I just downloaded it and searched for all the affected podcasts and all the correct feeds show up in a search of their podcast directory.

If you use Windows Phone, delete the podcasts from your phone and unsubscribe. Search for the podcasts and you will see two results returned. One of which is old and hasn't been updated in a couple of weeks, and one of which is current. Subscribe to the current one.

      Podcasts!

Made some updates to podcast distribution today. If you used a third party app to subscribe to our podcast RSS feeds via the old site, make sure you unsubscribe from those and subscribe via the new URLs provided via the new site. The old URLs will no longer be updated, moving forward only new URLs from the site will work. An easy way to test is to check if your URL contains "s3.roosterteeth.com" in it, it will no longer be updated. None of the new URLs use the s3.roosterteeth.com server.

If you use iTunes this change should not affect you at all...except that it will affect you a bit. The podcast will continue to download just fine for you, however as I've mentioned before, we are finally ending our support of the .m4a format for the podcast. From now on all podcasts will be standardized on the mp3 format across all platforms. Your iTunes may notice this and may indicate that the old podcasts have not been listened to since it sees they are mp3s now instead of m4a files. The podcasts have not changed at all, they are the exact same files just a different format now. These changes may take up to 48 hours to propagate to all iTunes users.

Let me know in the comments here if you have any questions.

      RT Podcast 350

Have you seen podcast 350 yet? If you haven't seen it yet, I recommend you go watch it before reading this.

We filmed this episode back in the old studio a REALLY long time ago. It was an idea we had that we initially wanted to do for podcast 300 but we didn't get around to it in time so we decided to either pre-tape podcast 350 or 400. We decided to do 350 so we didn't have to sit on the joke as long. Basically we sat down and pretended like it was November 2015 and tried to have what we pictured a typical conversation in "the future" would sound like. We never imagined the level of confusion it would cause amongst the people who were watching it live. We figured people might be confused for a couple of minutes then catch on to the joke. Watching the reactions live was probably one of the funniest things I've ever seen. I saw so many arguments about when this was actually filmed and even arguments over what the joke actually was! Some people were convinced we filmed this last week pretending to be in the past talking about the future...definitely something I never even considered.

I have to give extra thanks to Gavin and Michael for going the extra mile in subtle ways. This podcast was taped before Michael was married so he intentionally wore a wedding ring since he would be married in November 2015. Gavin even wore the same outfit on Monday that he wore when we taped podcast 350. Also, big thanks to the broadcast department for filming this and more importantly not losing this video.

I'm really glad this episode has finally aired, I've been really wanting to see everybody's reaction to it, and hopefully you guys enjoyed it.

Fallout 4, A (Spoiler Free) Love Letter

Before I get started I want to say that in the interest of full disclosure I was provided a physical copy of the game for the Xbox One by the developer. I have been playing Fallout 4 for about a week and have logged approximately 35 hours in the game so far. This discussion of Fallout 4 will not have spoilers for the game in it, however there will be potential spoilers for Fallout 3 and Fallout New Vegas in it. You've been warned. Also, I'm not going to rate the game or give it a score. I'll get this out of the way and say, yes, you should absolutely play this game.

I have been a fan of the fallout series since about the year 2000. My roommate at the time was playing Fallout 2 and encouraged me to give the series a try. I absolutely love the Fallout universe and have strong opinions about the games.

The story of Fallout 4 revolves around a vault dweller emerging from a vault two hundred years after the world went to nuclear war. The vault dweller is looking for his/her child who was kidnapped from the vault.

When I first started playing the game I felt that it was very iterative and that things had not radically changed from Fallout 3. As I played more of the game I realized exactly how wrong I was. The game definitely feels like somebody went through Fallout 3 and questioned every decision about design in that game. Some concepts like looting enemies and containers have been extremely streamlined. Instead of opening them and effectively pausing the game you now loot by simply looking at your target and transferring any items you want. Other concepts like skill points were removed while perks were overhauled. Skill points are gone. Instead now you are awarded a perk every time you level and you can level a perk up multiple times. For example the level 1 Hacker perk will allow you to unlock advanced terminals. The level 2 Hacker perk allows you to access expert terminals, level 3 gives access to master terminals and level 4 prevents you from ever being locked out of a terminal. Another overhaul was power armor. There is no training needed to use power armor in this game and in fact it is given to the player very early in the story. The downside is that now power armor almost behaves more like a vehicle. You get into and out of it sort of like a clunky Iron Man suit. Additionally you need Fusion Cores to power the armor. Fusion Cores act as fuel for the suit and as you use the suit over time your Fusion Core depletes and you must find a new one to use the suit again. You can purchase the cores from various vendors or you can discover them as you explore the Commonwealth. Loading screen hints tell you that the best place to find Fusion Cores are at old military bases and checkpoints.

Fallout New Vegas introduced the concept of a DPS rating for weapons. I felt the DPS rating was really useful because a weapon could have high damage but fire extremely slowly thereby offsetting the combat effectiveness of that weapon. DPS has been removed from Fallout 4 and is definitely the feature I miss most. Weapon stats still include damage and fire rate so players can get a good idea of what the DPS would be, it just takes a little more work on the player's part. I think New Vegas also did a good job of expanding the roles of various factions in the game and I think that carried over to Fallout 4. In Fallout 3 there were competing factions like the Brotherhood of Steel, the Enclave and of course Project Purity. New Vegas had the primary competing factions of the NCR and Legion but peppered in other groups like the Boomers, Freeside, Great Khans, Powder Gangers, The Strip, White Glove Society, etc. Garnering faction support was always of course optional but it made the game feel more full. Fallout 4's main conflict pits the groups of the Brotherhood of Steel, The Institute, and The Railroad against each other. The way I played the game definitely put me in awkward situations where I was trying to get as much help from each faction as I could without upsetting any of the other factions.

I was also extremely happy with the number and variety of companions in the game. I can't recall the exact number of companions available but I'm pretty sure it was more than ten.

People also seem really keen to know how big the map is. It is hard for me to say how big it is but it feels on par with the Capital Wasteland, maybe slightly bigger. That being said I feel like the map of the Commonwealth is much more accessible. The Capital Wasteland frequently had areas that were inaccessible due to debris and junk but I was able to walk around a lot more freely in Fallout 4.

Crafting. When the game was revealed at E3 and Todd Howard showed off the crafting system I knew I was in trouble. It wasn't until about 6 or 7 hours into the game that I realized the extent and depth of the crafting system. As you progress in the game you can accept missions from the Minutemen to help defend settlements dotted around the map. If you help these settlements you convince them to join the Minutemen and thereby are allowed to craft there. You effectively can build bases at any of these locations. The crafting is actually super simple to use and is a TON of fun. As was mentioned during the reveal this part of the game is entirely optional. If you don't want to craft you don't have to and it does not hurt you. Once you're in one of your settlements you can enter crafting mode and scrap just about everything in town and rebuild it to your liking. Scrapping items gives you the basic building blocks needed to craft everything in the game. Scrapping a car yields steel, a tire gives you rubber, and so on. More complex items will yield multiple materials. In my experience I was always looking for adhesive, screws and gears. The materials you collect are what you use to modify and craft your armor and weapons as well as everything in your settlement. Buildings, generators, turrets, farming, lights. As you build your settlements out it is important to build defenses so that raiders do not attack your settlement. Each settlement gets a numerical rating for things like food, water, beds, settlers and defense. To keep raiders at bay the game recommends that your defense rating is always greater than your food plus water rating. So for example if you have 5 food and 5 water in a settlement you want a defense rating of 10 or greater. It is an extremely simple system that works amazingly well. The base building and crafting system is so robust, it really makes me wish there was a way to let other players come in and see your base. Maybe something like the FOB system in Metal Gear Solid V.

The biggest complaint I have about the game is that some of the sound track has been re-used. There are definitely new songs in the in-game radio station however if I have to hear Butcher Pete one more time I may scream. I have played hundreds of hours of Fallout 3 so I probably have heard songs from that game more than most people. Along the way during the story I also had some problems with one character in particular and his backstory but I can't discuss that without spoiling a key moment in the game. I may have a separate follow up journal in a few weeks once the game has been out for a while. The other complaint I had is that I felt the Minutemen missions to unlock settlements became repetitive. They were all essentially the same mission over and over again. It didn't help that early in the game I made it a point to do these missions one after another. They are all essentially a settlement that is having trouble with raiders, the settlement shows you where the raiders are on your map, and you go kill all the raiders in their base. There are some variants like "my spouse was kidnapped by raiders, please rescue him/her" or "Raiders killed my family member and took a family heirloom, please go get it back" but it was all pretty much the same thing.

Fallout 4 is a more than worthy successor to Fallout 3. As I previously stated I only have about 35 hours in the game so far and wish that I had put in more before writing my thoughts down. I am definitely planning on playing much much more of this game and there is still tons for me to do. I still have plenty of missions and base building to get to.

      Too Many Guses

This evening I went to pick up dinner from a restaurant not too far from my house. I walked into the restaurant and there was a guy ahead of me placing an order and he was asking a ton of questions and just generally taking a long time. I was getting kinda annoyed and wished he would just hurry up. When the cashier asked the guy for his name he said "Gus". I thought it was a strange coincidence that we had the same name since I don't encounter too many other people named Gus. When he was done I walked up to the cashier and told her I was there to pick up an order for Gus. I commented that it was weird the previous customer was also named Gus and she replied that it was weird but that yesterday she also had two different customers named Gus.

A few minutes later someone came out of the kitchen and said, "I have an order for Gus." The other Gus and I had to figure out whose food it was and it turned out to be mine. As I was collecting my food a small boy, probably four years old or so, walked up to the restaurant employee and said, "My name is Gus!" The boy's father walked up and led the boy away and told him "Wow, I guess there are three Guses here right now!"

I don't think I can go back to that place anymore.

      Gears of War (Mad World)

I finally got around to watching the new version of the Gears of War Mad World commercial for Gears of War Ultimate Edition today:

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rwbYhvlrQbc

Maybe it is just me but I feel like this totally missed the spirit and tone of the original commercial:

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ccWrbGEFgI8

The spot was about a soldier fighting strange forces in a world we don't understand. The new version forgets that and instead gives us giant explosions and huge set pieces. It almost seems like the use of the Mad World song is a mistake in the new spot, or even worse that whomever made this commercial thought the song was the only important part of the spot.

Or maybe I'm just a grumpy old man and all you kids need to get off my lawn.

      Continental 8005

Last night I had a dream that I was flying somewhere internationally. The first flight I went on was fine but the airport I was connecting at was weird. It appeared that the plane I was on and the airport I arrived at were floating on the water. After getting off the plane I tried to find my next flight, Continental 8005. I thought United had absorbed all the Continental flights, but whatever. I tried to ask for directions but my mouth was inexplicably filled with chunky peanut butter. I kept trying to scoop it out of my mouth with my fingers but I couldn't get it out fast enough. I decided to give up and go to the airport bar.

      The end.

Podcast Gus was so angry to me in my dream that I woke up half way through the apology and kept apologizing.

      Yeah, fucked up.

RTpodcast was going on, and I was walking around my mansion/pool listening to it on my phone. You guys would say something funny and I'd laugh and comment out loud to myself. Did that for 30 minutes. Then you said something and I said "Oh man, that's funny Gus" and you stopped and spiked the camera and said "Can you just SHUT THE FUCK UP FOR 5 FUCKING MINUTES! GOD DAMN MAN!!"

I stopped, and I sheepishly said "Can.....you all hear me?"

"YES, YOU WON'T SHUT THE FUCK UP... GODDAMN!!"

Burnie piped in and was all "Hey Gus, let's roleplay, you be you, and I'll be fucking Moeparker and I'll keep interrupting the podcast, how about that, let's do that for the next fucking hour"

Around that time I woke up, but for the next minute I was talking into my pillow trying to calm Brandon down. He was talking to me and he was upset that I didn't mute my phone. I kept saying "I'm sorry, I didn't know" as I rolled over and then I looked at the clock. I mentioned to him that it was 345am. I looked around for angry Brandon was he wasn't there.

I got up to check if I was really awake. Yep. I went from dream to real but the dream didn't stop, my brain kept it going.

So yeah, you got so mad at me for ruining the dream podcast that I woke up and was still apologizing. Your anger is powerful.

Hearing you guys talking about best game of 2015 in the RTX stream, I'm gonna toss this in there - Have you tried Undertale yet? My friend kinda pestered me to play it and I thought it was all hype and some kind of circlejerk for another indie game, but I finally succumbed and gave it a shot.

I was dead wrong. It's a truly amazing game. In fact, one of the best ever made I would say, and I NEVER say that about things lightly - I've been playing since I was 3. This earnestly competes with the likes of Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy VI and IX, Half-Life, Portal, etc. Unless you're off-put by throwback graphics, but seeing the stuff you guys have played I know you're cool with it.

Unless you're some kind of heartless monster, you'll feel things for NPCs in a video game that you haven't felt in a long-ass time and it'll have a place in your heart for the rest of eternity. Choose your path well - I just say right now that there's a way to save everyone, you never need to kill anyone. That's all I'll say, choose your path from there.

Errr... you do play PC/Mac games too right? Just wondering. Heck I'd gift it to ya on Steam if you'd play it - it's just that awesome and I think everyone needs to experience this game.

Anyway, I coulda left this for any one of you, but I suppose I figured if anyone reads their RoosterTeeth profile comments the most then it might be you. Pass it on to Geoff if you think he'd be more likely to take it up, I kinda thought "Well Gus would be more likely to see what I have to say to begin with... and Geoff would be more likely to actually try it... hmm...". And correct me if I'm wrong about that, but I know you were the one that changed my name a couple years back because of a comment, so I know you check (assuming your habits are the same). You can just forward it to whoever at RT plays PC games to have them try it if you don't.

Also, if you get the chance, tell everyone I said great job at RTX. I know it doesn't mean much and I'm just another fan, but really, I don't know how people like you guys can get up in front of a ton of people like that. I figure you kinda numb to it over the years, but really, what you guys do on a daily basis takes some guts.

      Later!

Edit: Screw it, went ahead and copied the same thing over to Geoff's profile in case. Hope you guys don't mind a duplicate every once in a while.

Out of all the members of RT, just wanted to leave a message saying that you're definitely my favorite.

Without intending to sound too intentionally creepy, whenever I'm doing something, instead of music, I pop on the podcast. and because of that I guess I've listened to each episode around ~5 times over the years. It helps that my memory is shit and I can laugh at all the jokes again.

I see you guys haven't figured out how light-field cameras work since first time you mentioned it. To solve the mystery for you: Light field cameras have an array of microlenses at the focal distance of the main lens, with the sensors behind the array. Normally light coming from something that is not in focus will miss the focal point of the lens and the sensor. The microlens array catches that off-focus light and redirects it, allowing the sensor to collect not just the brightness and color of the light, but also the direction it's coming from. The directional information is then used by the software to reverse-engineer the focus on-demand.

Hey Gus in Podcast #214 you talked about doing a new intro for the podcast in the style of SNL. With a video showing the people on the podcast and the theme song for that week playing. I was wondering if there are any plans for doing this now or something like it?

Hello there. I am a big fan of Rooster Teeth and I have been so extremely excited to go to RTX for a long while now. I had to work hard all year to get to RTX, get straight A's in my classes and to get a job to pay for the hotel. Everything was looking positive, until I had found out that my dad had never even bought my ticket when he said that he did. Now I can't get into RTX, all tickets are sold and RTX is days away. My dreams were crushed, I was so ecstatic at the thought of actually seeing the creators of the best source of entertainment that I have found. I will still be going to Austin, since the plane ticket has been bought and the hotel (which is literally right next to the convention center). At least I'll be able to view the livestreams from across the street.

Not sure where to leave feedback, I noticed something after the site update that's a bit off. So far I've only watched RT Podcasts, but the way they are set up now, it's hard to get the description and who's in it before choosing an episode. Pretty minor. Just wasn't sure if anyone felt the same way.

Hello Gus, saw you today in the latest patch.
My name is Lorenz Btw. I heared you were dying for that chalice game because it was like xcom.
Well my friend, i wanted you to know about Wakfu. Imagine Xcom+MMO instead of playing a squad you play one character and maybe companions if you pay for them.
Believe me, it's worth one try at least.
