    • Much-Needed Update From Me (If You Care)

      WomanFriday Writer, Wife, Woman

Wow. So much has changed around here. Including my own life.

Some of you who know me only partially on this site or in real life (who also don't follow me on Facebook) have been asking what's going on with me. Like most of my non-rant posts, I'll try to keep this short and readable, as most online writing has become and most online readers expect:

      1. I'm still in Arizona, & loving it, too. I'm discovering lots of the very cool stuff this state has started offering and doing in the last few years, and how it's picking up when next-door neighbor CA is still struggling. Like the town I just moved from is getting an Alamo Drafthouse! It was cool enough to attract one! That's an epic win.

      2. Oh, yeah, I moved again... this time to a house my hubby and I bought! So the place isn't perfect. There's lots of updates to be made, including the kitchen (needs stained or painted cabinets, new countertops, new appliances, etc.). And it's certainly not our dream home w/ a fireplace and a Colorado mountain view. But that's all okay, because this is a real estate investment, and once we upgrade this home's value we'll start renting it out, buy another place, and start all over again. For a rich retirement -- all that later adult stuff you have to start thinking about, yo. Anyway, here's a pic:
        http://photos3.zillowstatic.com/p_h/IS5eixyo234nf00000000000.jpg

      3. Tubefilter is still my full-time job, but I'm re-evaluating my career and life. A lot of things have been building up the last 7 months to make me very unhappy. Hubby works nights Sun-Th, while I work days M-F, so we're on completely opposite schedules (Saturdays are the only day we both have off together). My job is the same, monotonous procedure day after day: write a news story, post it to social, do it all over again until I'm done with the day. I feel mostly dead by evening, and just stick on movies and TV. I don't do anything creative anymore (like my blog, which I've almost abandoned); I don't even read for fun at night, and I barely game anymore.

Everything hit the fan yesterday when I realized I'm turning 30 this year, and that the last few months of the year 29 have been shit except for a few highlights like RTX and this house thing. So. I'm considering moving back to freelancing, the only time when I had to work really, really hard, but felt free, empowered, and like myself. Hubby supports me in this endeavor, but doesn't want me to just quit my job, which is fair. I'm going to work on building up my client base and see what happens.

That's pretty much it for now. There are a lot more details I could cover (like how I've gotten six mosquito bites in the last week, more than any I've gotten in the last year, because we live near farm fields now), but if you want to know more, message me. :)

'Cause I can help you with that.

My site Geek & Prosper has launched! On it, I'll teach you everything you need to know about how to start and run an online business. And it'll all be from a geeky angle. You know, with Halo and Harry Potter and Star Wars references and all that jazz.

      Geek-And-Prosper-Manifesto-Online-Busine

Head on over to geekandprosper.com if you'd like to learn more. Plus, if you sign up for my email list, I'll give you 4 video interviews with geeky business owners (one's a freelance blogger, one's a YouTube producer, one's a comic book historian/consultant, and one's an accessories seller on Etsy). You'll also get a checklist of tools you need to get your own business started.

      All for free.

This is what many of you told me you wanted me to create for you, so I hope to see you over there!

P.S. Please share or leave a comment on the first blog post if you found it resonates with you (comments and shares on blog posts help me look cooler than responses here).

    • My New Job (And a Question For You)

      WomanFriday Writer, Wife, Woman

I'm going to keep this short, because I'm only one of many amazing RT people with good news and/or needs (ask @LoZelda who they are).

A month ago, I posted a journal called "Pre-celebration Night." I didn't explain then what it was for, so here goes: I'm officially a staff writer for Tubefilter.

      tubefilter-logo-trans1.png

That's right, I'm no longer just a freelancer. I'm keeping 1-2 good clients, but the Tubefilter job is of course taking 8 hours a day, and I'm trying to now keep the rest of my time free to build Geek & Prosper (oh, yeah, there was a name change in these last 4 weeks, too... I was worried Live Geek & Prosper would be considered trademark infringement).

As soon as I get used to this new schedule, I want to also figure out a way to help out the RT community. Like legitimately. I feel Geek & Prosper could be that route; I mean, wouldn't a ton of you love to start an online business and work for yourself someday? But I'm not sure. It still feels like offering free business advice to RT members isn't "enough."

So my questions are, what do you think the RT community needs help with? What are some areas I might be able to fit in and make things better?

      WomanFriday53cf1c0df2a42.jpg

It's because I'm pre-celebrating something. I can't tell you what yet, but I'll be able to share with you all by next week!

Also, "How to Grieve, Pt. 2" is coming soon.

    • How to Grieve, Pt. 1 (or Post-RTX 2014 Journal)

      WomanFriday Writer, Wife, Woman

Right now, my heart's tight and hard in my chest, like it can't stand the fact that my eyes are on this site again, looking at all the wonderful profiles of people I was blessed to meet last week at RTX 2014. But I'm telling my heart to get over it and go forth in RT glory for the next year until we all meet again.

      emotions-gif.gif

Enough drama? Okay, yeah, I'll move on.

Here's a brief recap of my week (part 1):

      Wed:
      - Arrived in Austin and got Torchy's with @MarksNutt and @tonyski.
      - Met up w/ @datalaughing, @Auchtane, @JDunlap, and @kaosblack21 at our house rental. Some of us stuck around that night for pizza and watched RT videos and @Ray's live stream.
      - After that, I went w/ JDunlap to get some groceries to make sure no one went hungry and had snacks for the week.
      - Played CAH w/ the whole gang before bed, during which we decided that kaosblack21 should be "Black Alex" because Auchtane is also named Alex IRL and we were getting confused. :)

      Thurs, afternoon:
      - Slept in before getting ready to meet a local friend for lunch. She dropped me off at the booze cruise location early, so I sat for an hour and prepped interview questions for the next few days.
      - Booze cruise commenced - SO ECSTATIC to see @Dame, @Laurin, @Newbs, @MaryFairy, @Kiyoshi, @John, @Shadowsflame, @Zack, @Cheshire_Cat, @Izzi, @DarkBowler, @RoadBlock, @DiMono, @Steven, @Juls, @ytrahne, @Myshu, @Erkan, @Fireball, and tons of other faces I'm forgetting right now.
      - Met @lukemckay for the first time and he's pretty epic; also met @OboeCrazy for "real" since last year I only saw her at the GlibShark panel.
      - Walked to the convention center with a group of Guardians (one of whom I didn't get her username from and I feel stupid now because we hit it off) to get my press badge.
      - Gave @Count3D some stuff he may put up at the auction next year.
      - Saw @baghdadbean and wanted to give her a hug but she was busy working.

      Thurs, evening:
      - Got back to the rental house, refreshed w/ a shower and hair/makeup touches, then went to the SideQuest charity auction with JDunlap and kaosblack21.
      - Ran into @Cointoss250 at the auction, and FINALLY met @LanAnh, @rebelfleet, and @LoZelda in person! They are sweet, sweet women (though Zelda may act otherwise). :)
      - Met lots of people but I can't remember their usernames, except for @Jengaship. Really, next year I need to get @Radius55 to make me more business cards.
      - Bought @JDunlap a drink for being such a nice guy and driving me around all the time. This was not the only alcohol he consumed -- read his drunk story.
      - Took a pic w/ @JJ and Dunlap. Pretty sure the latter was still drunk.
      - Talked to @williams's daughter about how after all these years, women's dress shoes are still not comfortable.
      - Bid on @SailorGirl81's Weiss jewelry set as well as the pint glass set made by... ?. I won the pint glass set, which I knew my hubby would love.
      - Saw lots of RT staff show up, which always warms my heart. One of the reasons I love this company. Hope they keep it up.

Stay tuned for the actual convention days themselves. Which were oddly less exciting than these events I did with friends every night. :)

      WomanFriday Writer, Wife, Woman

So RTX is one month away.

      Can you survive until then?

Me... I'm not so sure. Just got back from vacation to California to visit the in-laws, and I'm going to bed shortly here because Phoenix Comicon starts tomorrow. I moderate panels and act all professional for three days straight, then get two weeks to catch up on client work, try to get more subscribers to my blog, hang out with my cousin and her husband who'll be in town for a weekend, and prepare my panel for RTX. Then I'm thinking of attending VidCon (yes, @dacalac, I'll decide this ASAP) from June 25-29...

At which point, I'll get home, have 2 days of prep, and then I'll be flying out to RTX.

I may freak out at some point between all that.

    • Where I let go of a dream...

      WomanFriday Writer, Wife, Woman

Normally, I try to write journal entries that engage my followers and help me get to know you all better. I try to make these posts uplifting and happy, even if I'm encouraging you to challenge your thinking.

But I need to take one selfish entry for myself tonight, because I think I need to let go of one of my dreams.

When I started freelancing almost two years ago, I quickly realized that getting paid to write geeky things wouldn't pay my bills (at least at the beginning). I was fine with that, so I put effort into finding some steady, well-paying blogging gigs with businesses that didn't have time to maintain their blogs. I used the remainder of my time to market, but also to start sending pitches to video game websites and publications.

Yes, I wanted to be a video game journalist (whatever the hell that means).

I tried for a few months to get pitches accepted; I succeeded to get a few video game-related pieces published, even one or two paid ones, even though the rates were still way below what I was getting paid as a freelance blogger. I didn't care, though, because my name was attached to some video game clips!

But then a lot of changes happened in my life. We sold our house in Iowa, prepped to move to Arizona, moved, and then had to deal with my husband's back injury the first month we got here. Not only that, but I realized I wasn't getting any new blogging clients or moving up in the pay I was receiving, so I decided I had to start a new marketing push and re-define my blogging services more specifically to attract the clients I wanted (which I also had to reconsider).

Basically, all video game journalism got pushed aside for the last 8 months of my life.

And in this industry, that's basically a death sentence. Editors apparently only like to see news and reviews, which despite every other video game site posting the exact same thing, gets them traffic. So since I wasn't up to date on the industry news, and since I don't have money to invest in an Xbox One or any new games for my 360 right now, I realized I was fucked.

"But, Bree, don't you just have to start following the news again? Work your way back in?" Sure, I could do that, and I'm trying to pitch about once a week around my other duties, but when you realize that freelancing is a numbers game, and it could take 50 emails before I get one story accepted, that means I could be pitching for an entire year and only get 1-2 pieces published. Which may or may not be paid.

Not only that, but when I have an original idea about video games, no one wants it. It's all news and reviews. Even the ideas that are related to a news piece or what that news means for the future of video games is hard to get accepted, because normally these editors will just assign such things to their in-house staff or current freelancers.

So I think I'm giving up on this dream.

      tumblr_mfdy2vdgU41rujpd6o1_500.gif

(Yeah, no, I really do need to let go of this one, Jack.)

I currently need to focus on building my upcoming blog, which will be a powerful marketing tool to get me more paying work as well as brand myself better as a geek writer (since the blog will be about geek business). And, to be honest, the blog may gain me some traction in the video game industry, too, if I reference video games in my posts.

Maybe "letting go of a dream" is a bit much. I could come back to this at some point, so it's more like letting go of a dream temporarily while I focus on more important things that could spring my career ahead.

It's just incredibly disheartening when I thought I would be farther along as a video game journalist by now. Yes, a lot of this is my fault for not pitching the crap out of myself and not staying involved in the industry, but some of it I simply couldn't help (like I asked for my husband's spine to be fractured!). And now I'm wondering if I was even meant to be a video game journalist at all, or if it was just one of those things I wanted for selfish reasons.

I didn't want to share this anywhere else, because I know that other freelancers (especially the ones not in the VG industry) will just tell me to suck it up. That's not what I need right now; I just need to vent about my lack of a video game journalism career and my lack of being able to pursue it better at the moment. This seemed like the safest place to do that.

If you read this far, thank you. You didn't need to, but I appreciate it. If you want, feel free to share one of your current frustrations in life or a story where you had to let go of something to make your life better in another way! We can trade and be all supportive and shit. :)

Hi! I thought I recognized you, you were the old timey(1940's?) Tex with the cool cone and black veil right?! We talked at RTX about your outfit for a couple minutes! :) We are also in the RTX 2013: Exhibit Hall video. It's at 40 seconds!

I am entirely stoked. :) I'm actually finishing up my costume this week and I will probably try to put at least one picture up before I attend. If I meet Joel, I will. I still find it insane I'm going to be meeting some of these people I've watched for so long.

Hey! I'm actually in the process of putting together an RTX karaoke event at Bourbon Girl (212 E. 6th Street) on Friday 7/5, if you're interested in going. I know you said something about maybe volunteering to put together a master list of events. It's $25 an hour for a private karaoke room, which depending on how many people want to go, is a great deal. Could you also maybe spread the word?

      Thanks!

I definitely want to do it after the convention center closes for the day, so I was thinking maybe around 9 or 10 (maybe later, I'm not sure how long the bars in Austin are typically open). It really depends on how long we want to schedule karaoke for. We could do 3 hours of karaoke from 9 to midnight, that way people can still do other things if they'd like.

I LOVE analyzing fiction. Part of that is because if it's good fiction, you can legitimately interpret it in many different ways!

Are you JUST studying poetry or is that your current topic right now? I almost took a literary and critical theories course but ended up thinking it would be boring. It probably would have been, but I am sure I would have benefited from it more than I realized. I love to analyze movies, TV, and books after I've enjoyed them the first time around, and yeah... it would have helped me there.

        Sore! lol Thanks for asking

I know most themes use timthumb to dynamically resize images so you can probably incorporate that into the thumbnail code snippet to change up the size without having to resize ALL thumbnails. As far as reducing page load, look into a caching plugin like WP Super Cache or W3 Total Cache. It's been a while since I've used either of them but I believe W3 Total Cache can serve up static pages which will cut down page load by a lot! It also can minify CSS/JS so you're not having to make a ton of requests. Install YSlow for Firefox and it'll give you a good idea of what areas you can work on to speed up the page.

Oh, man, how are you feeling? I hope everything is back to normal!

Sort of! I got the images to show up on my home page, but I'm debating if they should look smaller and how to do that. Also, do you know anything about reducing page load times?

Really trying to focus on that and what I alone can bring to the geek blogging world, which is probably that I'm a lot less passionate about things like fake geek girls and all that then others are... so I'm a "boring" version.
