Anyone know how many peeps attended RTX Austin this year?

Leaving RTX was a little hairy, and required Maximum Effort...

... To get up early. I'd planned to meet up with @Myshu at some ungodly hour of the morning for a coffee/Red Bull because she had to man 'Signature Hall' in her role as Guardian.

      What time, I said.

      7:30AM, she said.

      LMAOWTF, I said.

      Deal with it, she said.

(I'm paraphrasing for brevity. Hundreds of messages were exchanged.)

Early morning was best. I had to get on a plane to New York at 1PM and meet up with some friends for a 50th birthday party anyway. But it turns out the ACC was locked down until 8AM. So I was sweating it out with a growing queue of peeps outside in the humid, grackle-plagued, cracked streets of Downtown Austin. After a wait we eventually hugged... Well, bumped arms: I wasn't going to let her hug a guy who'd been sweating outside for 40 minutes (YES I ARRIVED EARLY).

But after meeting Myshu, I thought "Yep, I'm pretty much done with RTX. That's my last one." (I'm not done with RT just yet, only the event. It's a lot of cash to spend, just to see friends and have the opportunity to buy weird shit.)

Back to the hotel. Bus. Airport. Where, to my surprise, (NOT) United didn't know who I was. I had a ticket for their airline, booked months in advance, but apparently I was John Smith, with the passport number LL123456. I shit you not: those were the exact details. I am, in fact, the worst spy on the fucking planet.

Unlike my last experience with United they honored my boarding pass first-time round. No in-flight entertainment, unless you hawked their app and downloaded a shit-ton of content prior to the flight to be watched on your own device. For domestic flights, I guess this is cool? We don't have in-flight entertainment in domestic New Zealand flights, but then again, the longest trip is about 2 hours tops - hardly enough time to watch any Marvel movie. But 5 hour trips to NY? Surely...

JFK was a madhouse, but a nice madhouse. I caught a private taxi to Manhattan where I met up with my Kiwi friends at a pizza bar. I was surprised: they served deep dish pizza. I thought that was a Chicago thing. But it was a good night out, and we all Ubered back to the Air BnB we'd rented in Queens.

There were two reasons for New York. One was my friend's 50th. But the second was to catch-up with @TheTyper and @dougss, two RT peeps I've known for far longer than any of us would want to admit.

We owned New York. On Monday we got lunch with one of my new Kiwi friends Lisa-Marie (who I'd known all of 14 hours) at a crepe place (that made the WORST Crepe Suzette ever), but she wanted to meet my friends and talk shop with Dougss, an ex-journo with a poly sci degree. I think it's fair to say she hit it off with Dougss: he totally fanboi-ed her. And who wouldn't: an Amazonian seductive Kiwi ex-Journo recently working at the highest levels of NZ government and now in Public Relations (because that's what journos tend to drift into in New Zealand)... Spitting out political nonsense at the speed of delight.

After breaking their brains with Lisa-Marie, I took the boys on a Helo tour of Manhattan. The flight was very cool, but I thought the lead up and outro of the experience was a little 'sausage factory'. There was no hospitality or engagement. Still, fastest way to get out to Liberty Island, and get a view higher than the Empire State. Let's face it: with only 3 days in New York there was no way I'd be leaving the city anywhere near satisfied, or able to visit everywhere. Helo tour: everywhere in under 20 minutes.

With the city heating up, what better way to wind down after a cup of corn syrup - Sorry, I mean a Starbucks frappuccino - than a stroll through the Metropolitan Museum of Art? We burned through that place - The Met was closing quickly, and due to a shitty night of no-sleep I was fading faster than a black guinea pig swimming in bleach. But Dougss managed to research depictions of angels in classical art while I got some decent reference material on ancient Egyptian shipwrighting.

Tuesday was party day. Because all my friends are awesome, the birthday girl invited Dougss and Typer to attend our little Central Park meetup where we violated laws and drank champagne in public. Then we hit the Bacon Bar. It's a bar. You'll never guess what every dish has. Including the desserts. And cocktails.

Dougss held court with tales of his very unrestricted youth (which were amazing, but I won't go into detail for fear of spoiling what's likely to be a New York times Best Seller) and I cursed myself for not bringing my recorder. Then, we marched to Times Square, because... Times Square. And then we bought what we Kiwis call 'An Horrific, Anguish-laden Prelude to Heart Disease' and what you Americans call a "Juniors Cheesecake". (Well... I bought it for Lisa-Marie, who was sick that day and couldn't attend the party, poor thing. She had a very bad reaction to the anti-Malaria medication taken in preparation for a PR trip to Haiti on Thursday - Yep, she's a fricken international force of nature.)

Wednesday was GTFO day. Typer, Douggs and I had brunch at some douchy cafe, and Uber-ed to Newark International, where I would fly to San Francisco to connect with my (unsurpassable) Air New Zealand flight home, and Typer and Dougss would subway to their car and drive to Michigan. The three of us had a great time together. I look forward to the possibility that they could visit me in my country...

...Where our nation's outdoor predilections would scare the bejeezus out of them.

      OroborosNZ Projector

Saturday's RTX went pretty well for me. I was basically camped out at Room 10C for most of my panels, but I ran into the Plotbubble stalwarts - Home of The Shizno and Beacon Broadcast - Daft Prodigy, Leah AlanaDavita, Bobberton and Sunday outside of the Improv event. I also talked to Michael - I think it was Michael, another Shiznoid - in the queue for Nico and David's Music panel. And after that, I chatted with Sam about his experience with a Myshu/Synnesai collab. So sound production peeps were represented :)

The 3D modelling panel was cool too. A met a guy named Zack in the queue, who is doing his dues at U.Texas. His background is in sound production, but with a family in Industrial Design (think '3D modeling for real things') he's getting into 3D stuff as well. Good sense of humor - after I observed the modeling panel all had beards we riffed on an ad for a new mouse-razor appliance for people in CG.

That evening, Nico invited me out to have drinks with a few RTX friends, at which he baited me about being Australian and I managed to get a few questions in that I couldn't raise at the panel. At drinks I had a great convo with a talented cosplay and design artist, Stephen. Like a few young artists he was a reserved participant at the table, but his work is really interesting to me in a couple of ways. First, the craftwork, talent and engineering behind his cosplay and fanimation collab blew me away. Dude's got serious chops. Second, he's collaborating with other RT peeps on his fanimation... but like a lot of collabs he's in danger of becoming swamped under several hats. That happens, and there's no great way to get good at showrunning without lots of trial and error. I hope his production takes off - set in the RWBY-verse it uses completely new characters but honors both the stylistic look and feel of RWBY-Actual.

There's a wake-up call here. The people standing next to you in RTX queues and across the table in informal drinks are forging the productions you want to see now. It's worth 5 minutes stepping into their vision, or inviting others to step into yours.

    • Did I say "6 hours"? I meant a Day.

      OroborosNZ Projector

I'd be ropable if I didn't have a deplorable sense of perspective.

6-hour delay at Auckland Airport due to bad weather diverting our plane to Christchurch. For distance perspective, that's like diverting a plane going to Austin... to Dallas.

We found some downhill wind to San Francisco... However, Air New Zealand was scrambling to find transfer alternatives for 600-odd passengers over 4 flights also affected by the delays. I got re-booked to a United Airlines flight, leaving 6 hours after I arrived in SFO.

I got my boarding pass and checked in my luggage. However, I was refused boarding because I didn't have a ticket. I was issued a boarding pass... but I didn't have a ticket. I don't know who screwed this up - Air New Zealand or United - but I'm thinking I shouldn't have gotten a boarding pass at all if the ticket wasn't transferred across. I don't get it.

So the wee smalls were spent on the Internet and phone, trying to get a ticket to Austin. I'd love to change clothes, but my clothes were sent to Austin. Almost all check-ins for airlines were empty - it was a midnight flight to Austin and almost all had gone home. I couldn't buy a ticket online - I'm a Kiwi, and there's a rule about peeps buying tickets within 24 hours of departure time if your country of residence is overseas.

After a 40 minute call to Air New Zealand it (hopefully) got straightened out and I'll touch down in Austin at about 2:30, check in to my hotel, then hit the convention centre queue for my NEXT challenge: getting my weekend pass.

Why challenge? I never got an email confirmation for the purchase of my pass. I have records of money going out paying for it, but no email confirmation. I really hope someone can be forgiving when I hit RTX because I'm going to be more than a little twitchy.

    • Why yes - I AM delayed by 6 hours...

Argh. Lightning storms in New Zealand are screwing over my plans to get to Austin in a comfortable timeframe.

Fortunately I came prepared with a new laptop. Say hello to... VERMITHRAX.

And I'll be spending the next four hours learning Spacescape to make galactic skyboxes.

      Hello eyestrain, my old friend...

You are/can be the proud owner of a Reason 9.5 licence!

I'll PM you the deets :)

    • Make me an offer for a Reason 9.5 licence

      OroborosNZ Projector

I've been a Reason user for over a decade. I now have 3 licences for Reason (something weird happened over the Reason 5 --> 6 upgrade path that got me an extra licence) and I'd like to flick one.

Buying Reason 9.5 new will cost US$399. Upgrading an existing Reason licence from any previous version (1 - 8) costs US$129.

Make me an offer in the comments :)

      How it works:

Propellerhead Software manages licences. If you don't have one already you'll need to make an account at www.propellerheads.se (just your usual login/password/confirm account affair, all free).

If I choose your bid (mb the highest, mb the most entertaining, prolly a bit of both), I'll ask you to throw some filthy lucre (USD) in my PayPal account.

Once it clears I transfer the licence to your Props account, and you're dancing.

Something worth noting: You can download the full version of Reason for free right now, and play around with the app, mb download some extensions on trial and make music. You can even save your work. You just can't open your saved work. For that, you need a license. So it's entirely possible for you to create a very complex song in Reason, even export it to a finished, high-quality .wav file, and so long as you don't close the file window you can keep saving and working on the file... until some power outage or system restart happens I guess, and then you'll have to get a license to open your file.

So if opening your saved work is valuable/convenient to you, make a bid :)

Bids close on Friday June 2 7PM EST. Only in the comments.

If there was ever an area that needs to be slapped in Blender it's rigging.

...OK, and physics. Physics and rigging. But mostly rigging. Because that's what I'm focused on for now. It might be physics later. But now - Rigging.

Constraints, and their relationship with models in terms of origin points are just... Hit n' miss. Parenting needs to be outlawed, and there are some location/rotation/scaling issues that are plain arcane.

Actually, if it has the same density as Earth, gravity would only be 1.9 G, which could be survivable with some adaptations :)

Back in the sixties, scientists did some experiments with chickens in high-G environments. The chickens got really muscular, lost a lot of body fat, and otherwise went about their business. Might not be the best analogue for people, but it's a proof of concept at least.

I suppose I should also clarify that the preceding comment meant that EWVC3 will be streaming about an hour and a half from now. I should not have posted just after waking up >__< sorry.

Hey, if it's 10:30 am your time, EWVC3 is streaming RIGHT NOW, and you should definitely watch it :) You should also capture it, because I'm getting out of class right as it starts and I don't want to miss anything =P

btw, I meant "if it's 10:30 am your time when you're reading this." I know how to time zone :)

Also you don't really have to capture it XD I'm sure all I'll miss is EW flipping his Fabio mane a bit.

Is that an evil Carl Sagan character I see? I think it might be.

Personally, I think the movie looks kind of crappy, but evil Carl Sagan whaaaaat .____.

Yeah, I gather that it's supposed to call back to trippy old sci-fi movies...which explains why the trailer is reminiscent of the end of 2001 + Cosmos + acid.

After seeing this trailer, I thought "Gee, I don't remember that one coming out when I was at varisty... Then I see it was made 2 years ago. Whaaaaat. MAN that looks and sounds pre-old.

Virtual Choir 3 is Water Night.

      I TOTALLY CALLED IT =D

From July 30 in the RnD Chat:

[7/30/2011 1:57:50 AM] DaftProdigy: Oro, I somehow got to listening to Eric Whitacre stuff again, and I'm betting this will be the next virtual choir piece, if there is one:

I never thought about it that way I guess...Hmm. I might end up screenshot-compiling too, as well as recording the choir track via stereo mix.

WTF??? I gotta buy my way into the choir (sheet music) this time? Screw that. I'll compile it out of screenshots.

Obnoxious liez, spread no doubt by Christian zealots.

We were thinking more along the lines of a Team Fortress 2 tournament with a little get-togther to trade treasure items. Humans can bugger off, frankly.

        Did you get mail?

I am using another light in addition to the Bryce sun, and it just looks "moody-dark" on PC gamut. But I'm looking at it on my iPhone now for Mac gamut and...yeah, dark. I'll keep that in mind for next time =)
