    • You're A Girl

So I walked into the mall to get to work today, and I came across this incredibly depressing scene. Two young boys ran into an arcade. The parents and young girl they were with stood in front of me, and then the girl started to make a run for it--for the arcade, that is. The mother kept grabbing the girl by the wrist and telling her to stop. She was livid with this girl.

"I want to go to the arcade! I want to play games!" the girl said.

All her mother would say was no. When the girl pressed why not, the mother replied: "Stop it. You're a girl. You don't play video games."

Am I the only one who thinks it's really disheartening that a parent--especially a mother--would keep her daughter from playing video games because she's a girl?

I uploaded my first Let's Play ever to Youtube today, and I have to say it was a ton of fun. I've been working on it for a little over a week, for an indie PC game called Dangerous High School Girls in Trouble. I've always been the kind of person who likes to do all sorts of things, and doing my own Let's Play meant coming up with what to narrate, editing video and audio, planning out how to play... This is right up my alley. Sure, there are things I might change--especially making the audio louder--but for my first shot, I'm really happy with it. I can't wait to work on some more videos!

ETA: I got a new mic that is going to do such good things for my audio. Yay!

    • Oz The Great and Powerful

So I went to see Oz The Great and Powerful last night, expecting it to be nothing more than pretty. It delivers on this, certainly. The costumes are particularly well done. Overall, it was an alright movie. My biggest disappointment about the whole thing was Mila Kunis' acting. Knowing her from That 70's Show, Black Swan, and Forgetting Sarah Marshall, this wasn't the best example of her acting abilities. All in all, the tone of the movie was a little goofy and corny, which James Franco's Oz contributed to quite a bit. I was perfectly alright with this. He was a carnival con man, so it made sense to pick this portrayal. It had me laughing. Although, to be honest, I felt like I was the one laughing the most in the theater, so perhaps this wasn't what the movie's intention was. But, if you're looking for something to see in the theaters right now, there are worse picks out there. Oz is funny, pretty, fantastical, and has some epic battle scenes.

From AH's Let's Play Moonbase Alpha:

"In Queens, you guys play hide and stab, right?"

"No, it's just stab. There's no hiding."

      "Walk and stab."

Oh Queens. Sometimes I really miss my hometown. smiley1.gif

    • Finding Inspiration

In the past couple of weeks I've had a difficult time writing, and I only recently realized why. I've been re-watching season one of Once Upon a Time, as well as watching my fiance play Assassin's Creed 2. The stories of both have inspired me, and led to me having fun with my novel idea again. Sometimes you can forget the importance of finding stories that you enjoy. Particularly if you went to school for writing like I did, you can fall into relying on reading theory about writing--about process, technique, all the nitty gritty details that are important for editing, drafting, and revising. But there is a certain magic to stories that inspire you, a feeling that they stir up in you of "That right there is what I want to do." Connecting with characters, investment in plot, fascination with a world or setting: all of this is best demonstrated by a great story. A great story can transform you and, if you're a writer, can transform your stories as well.

I've been working on a bunch of projects lately--writing a novel and a short story, some machinima work, stuff like that. I'd love to get some Let's Plays done as well. Unluckily for me, I don't have a ton of money to buy new games. Luckily for me, between my fiance's video game collection and my own, I still have a fair number to choose from. I do plan to buy both Plants vs. Zombies 2 and Remember Me this year and hope I can do some Let's Plays with them once I've played through them for a bit. I also own (directly or by proxy):

      Fallout 3/New Vegas
      Assassin's Creed 2
      Plants vs. Zombies
      Alan Wake
      Left for Dead 2
      (likely on an Emulator)
Dangerous High School Girls in Trouble
      Arkham Asylum
      DC Universe Online

From Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection (only some out of 40+):
      Comix Zone
Ecco the Dolphin/Ecco: The Tides of Time
      Golden Axe I-III/Golden Axe Warrior
      Kid Chameleon
      Phantasy Star I-IV
      Sonic & Knuckles/Sonic 1-3/Sonic 3D/Sonic Spinball
      Streets of Rage 1-3
      Vectorman 1-2

      Any suggestions/preferences/recommendations?

    • Unavailable Number

So I've been waiting lately for a couple of very important calls (from schools, but especially from a job I applied for), and for whatever reason I've been getting early morning calls from a number marked only as "UNAVAILABLE." It's only when I'm asleep and I don't hear the phone go off. I keep trying to calm myself by saying that it's a telemarketer. After all, no one is leaving me any messages or following up via email. But what if it isn't? What if it's one of those important calls I'm waiting on? I tried *57, *69, *everything, and nothing gives me the number. So, for right now, this is me:

    • My Oscars Bit

I am so happy that Jennifer Lawrence won an Oscar, especially for Silver Linings Playbook, which was my favorite movie of 2012. But if I have to see another picture, news article, or gif of her tripping I'm going to scream.

She's 22 years old and has already received a Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Comedy or Musical and an Oscar for Best Actress. It's quite the accomplishment, and I think that this deserves significantly more credit than whether or not she tripped on her long dress on the way up the stairs.

      In conclusion,
