Oh. There was also this the night before my book released, which made me just, ya know, a bit kinda sorta ecstatic:
Now, today, I'm getting to the post office to send out some signed materials that were part of the book launch. I'm hoping that people start getting their copies of Queen of Pentacles and posting selfies on Twitter and such/reviewing so I can feature 'em! I also have some (see: a lot of) writing to work on. My current projects include my queer YA novel (I'm ~50 pages in), a memoir about fibro (which is fully outlined but I might not start really writing until the semester picks up), and maybe a children's picture book or two... Oh, and I gotta send out a bunch of short stories to try and get them published so I can then try to get my short story collection published, too. And I'm re-reading Kristin Cashore's Fire.
Plus this weekend should be super fun. Shouldn't it, @Raf? :)
In a week and a half I start teacher orientation, and then the semester gets a'rollin' soon after!

I hope all of you are enjoying your weekend! I'll try to make this update short and sweet. As I've mentioned in a previous update, according to Inkshares' ideal rate of funding, Devils in the Valley should have 200 pre-orders by my birthday, August 26th.
That's a pretty tall order. I think it's only fair that I offer a reward if we reach it...
If we reach 200 pre-orders by 8/26, one of the first 200 pre-orderers will get a special item: a "From the Exercitus Files" manual that contains the update goal information (like the character profiles) and some other world-building content from Devils in the Valley--all in a physical, signed copy. If we reach 200 pre-orders by 8/26, every reader in the first 200 pre-orders will receive a free PDF copy of this manual. These manuals will all be distributed after the campaign ends. This "From the Exercitus Files" manual reward is in addition to any update rewards I've already listed on the Inkshares page.
Of course, this is only if we hit the astronomical 200 pre-ordered copies by August 26th. So put in your order, and convince your friends to do the same, ASAP!

Also, if there's any suggestions you have for the "200 pre-orders by my birthday" reward (if that happens), toss 'em my way. I have an idea I'm throwing around, but I don't know if people would actually be interested in it or not, so if you have anything I'm all ears. The next pre-order goal (a character profile for James, and some info on indie magic) is 23 copies away. :)
ETA: I forgot to mention that I'm doing a Reddit AMA on Sunday at 3 p.m. ET. I'll post the link on Twitter and such when I start the thread! Get your questions ready, people.

So most if not all of you probably know by now that I have two books I've been talking about a lot:
(1) Queen of Pentacles, Poetry Collection, Choose the Sword Press, $10
Queen of Pentacles is a poetry collection that centers around coming to terms with young womanhood. It uses traditional line form and hybrid prose poetry to explore themes of mental illness, personal spirituality especially as tied to nature, bisexuality, anorexia, gender, mortality, and motherhood. And there may be a video game reference or two in there for good measure.
(2) Devils in the Valley, Fantasy Novel, Inkshares & Geek and Sundry Contest, $10-20+
Amber--a witch who follows the rules until demons start organizing. She trains with James to secretly use illegal magic & find out what the demons want. What she doesn’t know is this path can lead her to exactly where the demon in charge wants her...
Queen of Pentacles is releasing on the 16th, and it'll be my first (published) book ever! I'm super excited about it. There are giveaways and everything! Also, on Sunday 8/14, I'll be doing an AMA on Reddit at 3 p.m. EDT. I'll post the link to that once I get it started up.
Devils in the Valley needs to get to 750 pre-orders and/or to get into the top 3 fantasy books in the next couple of months for it to get put into production, so I've been talking to literally everyone I know about it because I'm excited and want to make it happen.
Plus, there are pre-order goals for Devils in the Valley!
25 pre-orders: From the Exercitus Files: Amber + talismans
50 pre-orders: From the Exercitus Files: James + indie magic
75 pre-orders: From the Exercitus Files: Ben + Team Leads
100 pre-orders: From the Exercitus Files: Kat + the secrecy of magic
125 pre-orders: From the Exercitus Files: Murphy + new recruits
150 pre-orders: From the Exercitus Files: Cecelia + Exercitus
175 pre-orders: From the Exercitus Files: Malcolm + demons
200 pre-orders: From the Exercitus Files: Magic system
250 pre-orders: Where Devils in the Valley came from (influences)
(There will be more goals released once we pass 250 pre-orders.)
Still not convinced you'd like my stuff?
From Queen of Pentacles:
From Devils in the Valley (the full first chapter is up for free on Inkshares!):
"Amber’s power sparked like snaps of lightning inside the citrine stone at her talisman’s center. She rubbed her thumb over the old words etched into the silver medallion. Any nearby demons had managed to keep quiet. A couple of blocks away, all the college kids who’d bothered to leave campus had filled up the bars over on Sixth. As Amber walked down a back street, her free hand twitched inside the pocket of her purple leather jacket. Between each smack of her heeled black boots she listened for any sign of someone else, someone her eyes might not pick up on in the dark.
Nothing abnormal appeared behind her. Really, the most exciting thing happened when a pick-up truck drove by and didn’t slow down for the stop sign. The moment Amber started to think that she might get through this street without incident, shuffling behind her caused her to pause. Amber tucked her talisman back into her shirt. No need to give a potential demon the advantage of knowing that she was a witch. In one fluid motion, the shadow behind her lunged and Amber spun on her heel to face it, a tingle of heat from her concealed talisman warming the skin it touched.
Amber imagined what the big guy saw while he sized her up in those few moments. Dumb college girl, maybe. Not particularly tall enough or strong enough to defend herself. Sweet little braid of dark hair over her shoulder. Obnoxious, cutesy purple jacket. And most importantly: Alone. Easy target. Demons enjoyed easy targets, and Amber didn’t mind playing bait to lure them out in the dark alleyways of Sapphire Point. She smiled with a tilt of her head, not averting her eyes from him or backing away. Amber was not afraid.
"You lost, beautiful?" the guy asked, slowly approaching her as though she were some skittish wandering puppy he didn’t want to risk running off into the street."
So how can you help with my writing career?
-Pre-ordering both of my books would be so, so lovely of you! Like, seriously. It'd probably make me cry.
-Convincing your friends and family to buy my books. Also likely to make me cry.
-Posting about the books on social media, putting posters up in your area, or sticking slips in books in your local store. (Get in touch if you want me to send you the posters and/or slips.)
-Following the Inkshares novel page.
If you do anything like a podcast or Youtube interviews, I'd be happy to be a part of that. If you're a streamer and you'd like to tell folks about these books, I'd be really elated about that, too.
And I just want to take a minute to thank all of you who have already shown your support, whether that's with pre-orders, telling other people, or well wishes. I love you guys. <3

So yesterday I did something that I'd been contemplating on and off for a while. Actually, I did it because Geek and Sundry got involved and that just turned the awesome notch up to 1,000. I decided to put Devils in the Valley, the novel I wrote (and edited and edited and edited), up on Inkshares as a part of Geek & Sundry's contest. (The top 3 fantasy novels from August 1-November 1 get guaranteed publishing, the G & S stamp, and marketing.) I'm nauseous with excitement/anxiety. Anximent? Exiety?
Anyway, the point is, this really got me thinking of all the stuff I have on my plate. In the next few months:
-Promotion for Queen of Pentacles, which officially releases in less than two weeks; promo involves posting poems, doing an AMA, maintaining giveaways, and some release day shenanigans.
-Booking readings/signings for Queen of Pentacles, including one in Austin for RTX 2017.
-Selling 750 copies of Devils in the Valley before the start of November (or bare minimum selling more copies than the other people in the Geek & Sundry contest, the current top sellers of which have 54/37/21 copies pre-ordered in 2ish days).
-(Speaking of which, I need to make a video for my Inkshares landing page.)
-I considered, last night, the crazy notion of doing chill weekly writing vlogs--what I wrote that week, what I edited that week, what I read and how it was, etc. But I dunno how into that people'd actually be, or if I've got the time/energy.
-Sending out my second poetry collection for publisher consideration.
-Sending out stories and poems to lit mags.
-Teacher orientation at the end of the month.
-Grad student orientation at the beginning of next month.
-Teaching starting 9/7.
-My first semester as a PhD student.
-Keeping my fibro under control as much as possible.
-Taking up yoga for the fibro control/my own desire to get back into it.
-ALL. THE. COFFEE.
On the one hand, I'm kind of overwhelmed by what I've gotten myself into this year. On the other hand, this is what I love. I love doing things, and I love the things I'm doing. I'm just going to have to continue being my ambitious and overly organized self. Honestly? If everything works out right, this is more or less what I want my life to be. Except, eventually I want to swap out being a student with being a mom. Eventually.
Annnnnnnyhoo! I would super appreciate it if you order my poetry collection Queen of Pentacles, releasing 8/16. If you do read it, I'd love for you to review it on Amazon, Goodreads, etc. I would also be so very appreciative for any Devils in the Valley pre-orders. That novel has been my baby for years and I really want to get her into readers' hands. Even sharing links to Queen of Pentacles and Devils in the Valley helps--you never know who might be interested! You would pretty much be my hero if you shared both links and bought both books. Like, Buffy Summers/Spider-man/X-man-level hero.
Why might you like Devils in the Valley?
-college town, with a twist
-fantasy set in our world
-sexual tension for days
-themes of power, autonomy vs. working with others, & tradition vs. innovation
-women who kick ass
-putting new cosplay opportunities into the world
Still unsure? If you click here, you can read the first chapter 100% for free. And I've got a book jacket-style description on that page, too. I'd love if you commented on there, even to say hey.
So go ahead. Make my day. :)
(Meanwhile, I'm going to go throw up. Or maybe do a happy dance. I dunno. At some point, there'll be coffee involved.)
