I think this is the last place I need to update on the events of this past Friday (8/17). Some of you are friends with me on Facebook or follow me on Instagram, so you may know already if by some miracle the algorithms of each decided to actually work.

Friday evening my husband and I had to make the sudden and difficult decision to let our little 4 year old dog Waffles cross the Rainbow Bridge. She had been not feeling well since the previous Sunday (8/12), and that Tuesday the vet had determined she likely had gastritis based on what he saw and pointed out to us on the x-rays. By Friday she could barely walk and she looked SO miserable. X-rays that time showed that the stomach inflammation was gone, but the vet was concerned that her kidneys appeared to be small and odd-shaped. A subsequent blood test confirmed that her kidneys were failing hard and fast.

This week has been difficult. As I stated above, this was very sudden. She was seemingly fine the week before (dogs are naturally programmed to hide pain, so "fine" is subjective here in hindsight), then in what felt like the blink of an eye we were making euthanasia and cremation decisions. We had just celebrated her second Gotcha Day on July 28th.

We got her back yesterday in a polished cherry wood box with her name engraved on the side. I placed two of her favorite toys on top of it: a blue stuffed sheep cuddle toy we called her "baby" and a little plush squeaky dumpling she got last Christmas in a Bark Box.

Not gonna lie, it sucks. I keep cycling through sadness, guilt, and anger -- anger at the circumstances and not at the wonderful veterinary staff -- with interludes of okayness. She was my 24/7 companion since I'm a stay-at-home wife. She was the first to know there was something wrong with me last year when I had pneumonia and kept a close vigil over me until I was better, earning her the nickname "Nurse Waffles". She was also my "Cuddle Bug", my "Monkey Butt", my "Doofus Dog", my "Waffles Pup". And now she's gone.

That being said, if you feel so inclined, and PLEASE don't feel obligated if you don't want to or can't afford it, donations may be made in her memory to Rescued n' Ready Animal Foundation, the nonprofit rescue we adopted her from in July 2016.

Probably not posting anymore for a while until it doesn't take a million years to navigate from the video site to my profile (not that I post much anyway, but the likelihood has taken a severe drop). Here's hoping a sleek and functioning community portion is coming soon(ish) to make the claims of having a brand new site 100% true.

... since I last made a post. So, how's it going? What's everyone up to?

Me? I'm going into my second week of Keto, along with alternating light beginner calisthenics and yoga. After wandering around Planet Comicon and feeling awful and sore for a few days afterward, I decided it was time to get serious about getting into better shape and taking care of myself. I'm even taking the time to learn proper meditation techniques (mental health is important, too!)*. Also finally put red filters on my phone and laptop at night - I know, I know: should've done that ages ago, but better late than never, right? - and I'm starting to notice a positive difference in my sleeping habits. Hubby came to the same conclusion for himself, though I haven't convinced him just yet to try meditation. He's also not thrilled with the idea of trying yoga, but he's at least willing to try it.

Aside from that, there's not a whole lot going on in my little world. So tell me: what's going on in yours?

(*Disclaimer: I understand meditation isn't a cure-all for, nor does it necessarily help everyone dealing with, mental health issues and should not be utilized in place of any medications that have been prescribed by a doctor. Ditto for Keto; it's not for everyone and should not be utilized as a diet fad to try on a whim.)

Over the next two days I have to bake and decorate a cake (cake and icing are from scratch - pray for me lol), then Saturday is my hubby's birthday. Sunday is a bit of a rest day, then Monday through Thursday I'll be cleaning and getting things together for our trip up to Kansas City for Planet Comicon.

This is the first con in a couple years that we've been able to afford both of us going, so I'm excited. Plus RWBY PEEPS ARE GONNA BE THERE!  heart_eyes

This is also the first long car trip and hotel stay with a dog, so that should be fun. She loves car rides though, so that part should be fairly easy. It'll be the whole staying in a new place alone for a few hours that might get tricky - thank goodness for puzzle treat toys (hopefully)!

I got busy a few episodes into RWBY vol. 5, so I decided to binge it once it was all out. What better day than today?

      Thank you, Monty.  heart

My little doggo has to go get her yearly boosters as well as get her teeth cleaned tomorrow. She is NOT going to be a merry pup when she gets back from the vet. Fingers crossed the vet doesn't find any reasons to make extractions.  grimacing

I don't remember if I've brought it up before and I can't be bothered to go back and look at present, but I'm not a 'New Year's Resolutions' kind of person. I see a lot of people, not all but quite a few, fall into the trap of setting lofty or somewhat outrageous goals for themselves and then either giving up or feeling bad if they can't quite reach them.

Here's the thing: there's nothing particularly special about making New Year's resolutions. It's all symbolic: "New Year, New Me". You can make resolutions and set goals at any time of the year. If you find yourself feeling pressed into making a decision, then don't. Do what feels right for you. Research the new thing you want to try, whether it's working out or a new skill or even going to the next level of something you already know. Research, make informed and rational decisions, and then set realistic goals from there.

If you already do that and just choose to put those plans into action on New Year's Day, good for you. I hope you succeed and I wish you the best, but my point is to only do it if you're comfortable with it and not because it's the status quo. There's no rush, there's no race (well, unless you're planning to train for a marathon, but that's a little different).

      You do you.

Well, it's been a little over a week since I mailed my card to my exchange person. I haven't heard anything, so I hope they got it. It should have arrived in a couple of days in relation to their location from me, a week at most assuming the mail slowed down significantly because of the holidays.  grimacing I did get mine from my Santa though and she seems like a super totally awesome kick-ass person.  relaxed

But now Christmas is only three days away. THREE. DAYS. AWAY. And holy crap, am I SO glad I don't work in retail anymore. I do not miss it, especially this time of year because people [customers, managers, and even co-workers] can get exceptionally nasty over trivial bullshit. Most wonderful time of the year my ass . . .  unamused

However, all of my shopping is done. I only have a few gifts left to wrap, and the only plans I have for Christmas Eve is finishing cleaning my house during the day for company coming over for breakfast Christmas morning and then staying in with my hubby and pupper that evening and watching a movie or something and exchanging stocking stuffers (that's our Christmas Eve tradition - even Waffles gets a nommy treat in her own little stocking lol).  dog

But what about everyone else? What are your plans for Christmas? Or if you celebrate something else, what did/do you do? Or if you choose not to celebrate any holiday, but rather the sentiment of togetherness and spending time with the important people in your life, what do you do for that?

Even if all you do is air grievances on Festivus (tomorrow - get your poles ready!), I hope you all have or have had a wonderful whatever it is you choose to celebrate.
