Holy Crap that is a long damn time and damn I’m getting old. So as I mention every year when I make one of these journals my handle of DarkBowler wasn’t my first name on the old www.RedvsBlue.com site so even though my true 11 year was months ago I figured I should write something down for this anniversary. It’s incredible to think that I have used this name for the past 11 years and it has become my identity online on damn near every site that I use whether it be for Fun/Personal/Business/ or hell even some of my internal login’s for work are DarkBowler; but it all started here on Rooster Teeth. I take a tremendous amount of pride in the fact that I have been here for so long and while I may not post near as much as I used to I still lurk constantly in the forums and keep up with friends on the site. 11 years is a damn long time to stay involved with anything especially something online where trends can change by the day and what is “Hot” right now will turn in a horrible MEME before you know it.
What being around for such a long time has done for me is it has given me perspective and the joy of watching something grow and evolve from this tiny company to the juggernaut that many of us find ourselves spending extreme amounts of time/money/effort to take part in and help. Community is defined as “a group of people living in the same place or having a particular characteristic in common” and for all of us that living in the same place is the Rooster Teeth site and the common characteristic is the love of the people who are here and the content. Right now there are RT community members who are helping people in the forums, creating awesome art, working on this tiny convention thing that happens in July, or just talking to someone out there who may not have people IRL to talk to. That is what community is; that is what this place is about.
A few days ago all sponsors were sent an email with the title “Rooster Teeth Insider” and in that email there was a survey with a single question “What can we add that will make your Sponsorship more valuable (e.g., a physical item like a shirt, or digital perks like exclusive emoji)? “. Now at first I wasn’t even going to click on the survey link at all (I don’t like click bait, sue me) but for whatever reason I did and what I thought was very interesting. As the redirect happens (http://click.email.fullscreen.com/) appeared and whether right/wrong/or otherwise what that meant to me was this was not a survey for RT but for the parent company Fullscreen. After I saw that I was not going to write anything and just put in N/A and hit submit because corporate politics being what they are any answer I put save for one of the three they mentioned would probably have been ignored. Instead I decided to do something different and write a pretty long response about what a sponsorship meant to me and why I could really care less about t-shirts, emoji’s, and the like. What I wrote about was community and friendship and meeting people from all over the world that I would never have would it had not been for the RT site. I didn’t plan on sending it in I just figured typing it out would vent out frustration about how IMO the community side of the website has been sacrificed in favor of producing content and even a year after the new site rollout basic things still don’t work/exist *cough moderators cough*. Mind you I know Adam and the team can only do so much and they have a priority list that they may or may not control. Regardless I got to the end signed my name and for some reason I sent in the response. Now I know that it probably will never be read and that even with my 3:1 praise to criticism/suggestion for improvement ratio (learned that from management bingo) I may piss off someone who reads it but it is because I care so much about this place and love this community that I said what I said. I did save the response and maybe one day I will post it but right now is not the time. I’m not special or different I am just one person among hundreds of thousands of passionate people who cares about this place and would just like to make it better in any way I can.
*jumps off soapbox*
So what’s next for me, well as some of you may or may not know I have started streaming, not often but usually twice a week, if you want to check it out you can find me at www.twitch.tv/darkbowler . I stream all kinds of games and by request (or I have work to do) I will do a photo edit stream where you can see photos before I release them, hear how I edit, and see photos that never make it online for one reason or another. I will be doing those a lot more as I start traveling again for summer con season and vacation so if you like my work (first off I love you J ) stay tuned to my twitter and I will let you know when I am working on them. I am going to be at RTX this year; I will have all my photo gear including some new toys I have picked up this year. I am still not sure if I will be shooting the event in any official capacity but trust me if I am there I will have my gear on me. I will be getting in to Austin on Saturday June 25th and already have some photo shoots scheduled for before the event and in the evening but I still have plenty of time available, if you want to schedule a photo shoot/event Tweet at me www.twitter.com/darkbowler (DM’s don’t always work on here still) . If you want to see some of my work from over the years and multiple conventions including RTX you can check out my website at www.connormacraemedia.com
To sum it all up; I love you all more than you ever will know or I can express, I love this place even when it causes me a great deal of stress. I miss you all and can’t wait to see you again.
Have a good one,
