Volume 5, Chapter 11: The More the Merrier

RWBY: Volume 5, Chapter 11: The More the Merrier

Ruby, Weiss, Blake, and Yang are each entangled in journeys of their own, but they all share one destination: Haven Academy. Whether it's the promise of ancient relics, mystical maidens, or simply more power, it's clear that the stage for the next great battle for Remnant has been chosen. The question is, with so many players in this game, who's going to come out on top?

I'm gonna be a bit more coldly honest...I think I don't care... The action is lackluster and animation is repeated (don't think I wasn't going to notice that Ren and Nora vs Hazel repeat just because you changed the camera angle) and...it just feels dull. Things are happening sure. I'm just not being sold that what's happening is important.

    • Meow625

I totally agree. I just feel like I can't see their effort in these later volumes. The fight scenes, the flow and the shot composition all seem lackluster. But I'm still hoping that it'd get better coming from a concerned fan.

I'm glad somebody else saw this. When I go back and watch season 1-3 there is dynamism and tension in the fights. This is just boring. Character stuff is cool and all, but these kids are supposed to be getter better at fighting, not getting worse. Did RT just get a new choreographer or something? There is no flow or art to this fighting at all.

    • agent-cobalt

Agree, and why does the fight between Yang and Mercury, and Nora, Ren and Hazel just one quick scene? It cuts to Lionheart looking over the balcony and it's dead quiet. It doesnt feel like all these people are fighting in the same room. It cuts between ruby and wiess and it feels like a fighting mk or injustice story mode where everything just disappears as two characters go at it. Where'd raven and crow go? Why is everyone having there little fights so perfectly off camera? I would have taken a two month delay just to make this awesome sounding fight look awesome. As it is, it just ruins the more emotional scenes of the season.

Btw, people that rate stuff like this as flamebait need to be told again, by an adult preferably, what flamebait means. Downvote's for disagreeing are fine, but labeling legitimate criticism as spam is really dumb.

So I noticed that Jaune seemed to only be swinging for CInder's blind spot. Was that intentional, or was it just a natural result of him (or his mocap person) being right handed?

  • user-5650abb5d93f1 FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold

So according to the fandom, Cinder steals Vernal's kill, and that's Jaune's fault.

In fact, by provoking Cinder into stabbing her, he may have saved her life, Vernal was probably going for decapitation.

vussar He's supposed to be a strategist, but yeah, they keep fucking him over. Not saying that it was intentional, or that he should be bragging about it, but still, Weiss getting injured isn't his fault. If it wasn't Cinder it was gonna be Vernal.

Listen, if they kill off Weiss, there's really nothing holding me to the show and I probably will stop watching the eps weekly (though I don't think I'll completely drop rwby, but it IS the second time they kill my favorite characters) I doubt they'll kill Weiss since it would've been a more obvious wound like through the chest instead of through her torso

  • PhoenixWolf17

Honestly, I just wanna know more about Ruby's silver eyes. I mean, it's clear Weiss isn't going to die considering the shows not called 'RBY' (In before plot twist and she does die) so I'm just like, why don't you do something like teach Ruby how to actually use her powers instead of unlocking them when feeling intense emotion? Or at least an explanation of why they couldn't even try teaching her to use them. Also, I thought the team RWBY Reunion was going to happen this episode but I guess thats in the next one. All well.

Blake will likely enter in when there's more emphasis on the White Fang portion of the attack, with an actual reunion at the very end of the last episode.

I agree with the Ruby comment, but she'll likely have to be a bit more "hardened" before that can happen or have to meet someone else with silver eyes, which I doubt.

Things Jaune should have done vs things he did:

    1. Listen to Qrow and not initiate conflict with obviously stronger foes.

     - Start a fight with the boss.

    2. Keep his weakness a secret.

     - Tell Cinder exactly what to do to hurt him.

    3. Warn Weiss of the oncoming spear before she threw it.

     - Whisper no, then cry a little.

Guys try to remember that this is an animated series. They point spears and adjust placement based on dramatic effect, not for medical accuracy. Most shows are not that worried about blood loss or vital organs being a factor in a characters death.

  • xaykwolf

Honestly, unless some bs goes on, Weiss will be fine. Her wound isn't near any vitals, just intestines and maybe her right kidney. Hoping all the other comments are right, though, and this is finally the awakening moment of Jaune's semblance.

Also, I dunno if it's just me, but the background music for the beginning of Weiss' and Vernal's fight was AWESOME.

Here's what I think is going to happen by the end of the series:

-Juan will FINALLY discover his semblance

-Since I haven't seen any back story, I predict Vernal is going to die

-Weiss will survive, she may even become the next spring maiden

-Blake and group will show up at very last minute (I know that's obvious) and the bombs don't go off

-Adam and Raven manages to escapes

-Finally (and this is a long shot) the surprise ending is that Pyrrha is not only alive, but has been brainwashed to work for Salem.

On another side note, what's the deal with Hazel? He don't seem to be the villain type. He's a pacifist and only seems to be doing things because he has to. It's like he's only working for Salem because she did for him or has something on him and he's a possible candidate to turn against her.

FistOfIron & user-59f90fd5a07a5- From what I see unless one maiden can have ALL the powers, Salem is going to need a few more gals on her side if she wants to collect all the relecs. Making people think that one of their teammates like... Pyrrha is dead, Salem can take all the time she she needs to brainwash her for future use. As for Raven, she is in this for herself and looks to cut her losses after the battle and disappear from both Oz and Salem.

Makes no sense that, some episodes ago, they knew it was a trap. Yet walk right into it. The "good characters" in this show seem to always be behind the ball. I get that in most stories the protagonists have some sort of fall, but its basically consistent throughout this show for the sake of its longevity. I don't care who dies, or how they die, but at least push the show in a direction that makes sense. Rather than making the protagonists out to be borderline thoughtless in most if not all of their actions. Its as if none of them have learned to not rush head on after 5 volumes. I also have lost count of the times the protagonists simply watch a villain stride towards someone they intended to kill, only to watch them reach out a hand and scream 'no' instead of doing something about it.

    • jackmarr1512 FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold

The 5 volumes have only occurred over maybe 1-1.5 years in the series' time. That's not always enough time to develop one's skills and abilities (i.e. Jaune's semblance, if he has one, and Ruby's understanding of her powers). It's true that Weiss had been practicing her glyph abilities, but she's only gotten the chance to test those abilities in actual battle twice this season; she is still reliant upon the glyphs instead of also trying to hone her swordsmanship skills as well. Yang JUST got control of her semblance thanks to Ty. Also, the protagonists are kids who are basically still in high school, most kids aren't very bright at that period in time; they don't learn until something tragic happens.

I have tried so hard not to take characters for granted in this show especially since Pyrrha, but it's almost impossible to not feel tragedy every time something massive happens. So basically no matter what it will always be an extreme sense of loss. Sincerely hoping Weiss pulls through

    • FudgeMC FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold

I hope she does and she doesn't, does because she has so much potential as a character but don't because it would be a way for them to prove that they aren't scared of killing off main characters and yes I know we had pyrrha but weiss dying would have a much greater impact, on top of that I love emerald knocking out rwby when she goes silver eyes mode because it shows she isn't invincible, I totally thought she was gonna go deus ex machina mode and win instantly, it also hints there's a connection between cinder and rwby because afterwards cinder appear hurt even though rwby wasn't conscious long enough to do anything. ps. Raven's comment makes me theorize that she killed summer, which leads onto my Qrow and summer being rwby's parent's theory as it would make sense for raven to kill her then after all she loves nothing more then forcing Qrow into despair.

  • childishaspi

This is solely my opinion based on the events that occurred in this episode.

    1. Weiss Vs Vernal- I kinda figured team RWBY would take a major L in these next few episodes due to the fact how they were building things up. It may even get to the point were someone on the team will be presented the option to kill someone because least be honest, they are fighting people that are willing to take lives. The biggest reason why Weiss lost to Vernal was because she was solely focused on using her summon. As of this moment, she is treating her summon as her trump card even though the casting time isn't all that good. She is a versatile fighter, but she is up against a stronger and more experienced warrior who wasn't going to let her get away with anything. Vernal isn't a fool and knows better than to let Weiss pull out her trump card.

TLDR; Simple fact Weiss was outclass period, no matter what approach she would have took, Vernal's experience alone would have been enough to take her out.

2.Jaune- It's pretty obvious what they are doing with Jaune, they are building up the awakening of his Semblance through sheer psychological and emotional distress. Cinder's been taunting this man to the ground, adding all types of salt to his wounds. Jaune is doing so poorly against Cinder because of the fact he's emotional exhausted, at this point his body is just moving. They choose Weiss to take the fall because you have to remember Jaune used to like Weiss. So now not only did he lose the woman that actually loved him(Pyrrah), he know witness the woman he like before get impaled by the same woman who killed Pyrrah. Jaune has a lot on his plate right now, so him acting rational or even fighting at his optimal level is not going to happen.

TLDR; Jaune has gone though so much shit right now, he is incapable of fighting at his best because of the emotional stress holding him back.

Sum it all up: This is all for the sake of Jaune and whatever purpose he holds in RWBY.

Weiss is too weak this episode, I don't think it really fits the previous episodes and volumes. Sure, she is relying too much on her summon which is a new ability for her, but it feels super weird considering everything so far. Seems like they needed someone to almost die and they picked her for whatever reason

Ozpin and Qrow knew it was probably a trap and they didn't do anything about it (at least so far). Also feels really weird

The fights were good, but the trash talk leading to them felt like I was playing a fighting game. "We're not family anymore", "Let's see what the Schenee name really means", "I'm more than a name", "I don't wish to fight you"

Great moments for Ruby and Jaune, next episode will probably reveal his Semblance. And I think (and hope) Weiss won't die, she's a  lead character and Jaune's Semblance should have something to do with it too.

She was out of her league against a maiden who has enhance speed, reflexes and strength. Also weiss's main advantage her speed and agility were a hindrance in this fight. Don't forget that she isn't a master at summoning, so it probably takes alot for her to summon that armor.

The fights weren't good at all, the team clearly haven't been able to replicate Monty's firm grasp of choreography and the setups of these fights were extremely pedestrian. The past two seasons have built up to this and it's very disappointing.

First I agree that Weiss was weak in this episode. Second Weiss isn't going to die.

Of course Weiss was going to lose. She was fighting a MAIDEN, you know, the same type of magical fighter that KILLED OZPIN? I don't get why everyone is freaking out at Vernal beating her

    • piu

The thing is, someone can get beaten while still being skilled (Like Yang vs Neo, Weiss vs Chainsaw-guy, Pyrrah vs Cinder, Roman vs Blake) simply because they are outmatched.

Spoiler: Nothing like that was shown here. She accidentally threw herself against a pillar with her own glyph, openly reveals her back to the enemy and, after her previous attempt clearly failed, tries to summon again.

I get that it´s a new ability an all, but if it now (suddenly) takes her a long time to summon, then she shouldn´t even consider it in a quick-paced fight like that. It just makes her seem stupid ... and leaves her wide open for attacks if no one backs her up. Furthermore, she almost exclusively uses dust (from Papa Schnee´s company) and summoning which is hereditary only in the Schnee-family - so it completely negates her "I´m more than a name" statement.

Also, Vernal didn´t even use her powers. Yet Cinder had to use her powers against Pyrrah. Does that mean that Vernal is better than Cinder?

The problem is, Vernal was strictly told not to use her maiden powers. She was beat purely just by her weapons of choice. Which makes it look even worse for Weiss maybe not being as skilled and powerful as we all hoped and saw when she first summoned flawlessly.

I do believe less would be wondering how she was beaten, that's obvious that it would happen. Its more about them walking into a trap and then playing the first hand in a fight they would obviously lose. It's as if rooster teeth purposely makes the protagonists less competent to simply force a grounds on making a come back in some miraculous way, likely Jaune's semblance being some revitalization, would fit with pyrrha's death.

Anyone thinking that weiss is going to die,
First, Be rational. This show would make no sense if it would kill of any of its 4 main characters. The literal show name is RWBY, as in Team RWBY(Blake is currently not with the rest of the team,  but still alive).
Secondly, unlike Phyrra, Weiss was not hit directly at any vital organ (ribs still may be shattered).
Third, Plot armor, doesn't need to be a bad thing, but shes as mentioned, one of the 4 main chars.
Trust me, she has enough plot armor.

Would some one please give me a constructive way if explaining what is so bad about the fights? I continuously see people say how the fights are terrible, how Monty was better and all that. I am not going to deny, Monty was a genius but I just want to know why nobody seems to appreciate the fights here.

The way I saw it at least, off course Weiss isn't going to do well alone. She is like the black mage of the group, she needs someone to watch her back and give her time. She has never done well on her own, and here Vernal isn't letting up, not giving her time to check her surroundings, or summon the knight. And Ruby against Emerald, throughout the fight, she is watching Jaune who is fighting CINDER you know, that one person who killed Pyrrha. Take into account that Jaune isn't a competent fighter, and yes he gets his arse handed to him, especially once she gets serious. From the start of the fight she was toying with him, breaking him. Though yes the fact he couldn't get up is dumb I'll admit to that.  And Ruby being Ko, think about it, last time she used the silver eyes she was out for a couple of days, here she started and was quickly knocked down trying to save Jaune. I dunno, that is my point of view I like to see fights that use the context as well instead of just 'hey, let them look badass'.

I disagree that Weiss can't handle her own. If nothing else, she soloed the knight that she's trying to summon. She soloed a man with a chainsaw back in V2 (and lost but it was a very good try) and she also killed that bee thing earlier this volume basically on her own. I mean, pilot guy maneuvered the ship for her but she did all the work. Weiss has always been an amazing fighter. She's precise and calculating and is good at finding interesting ways to use her versatile semblance. So to see her making multiple futile attempts to summon the knight and even propel herself into a pillar is kind of disappointing.

I think its partly because shes out of practice. Its likely she hasn't had a real fight in the whole time skip while everyone else were. She's relying on her new power and that's her downfall, in addition to this shes against a maiden who outclasses her in probably every way being trained by Raven of all people. i'm not surprised she lost to be honest.

    • kpm101

What she fought before doesn't hold a candle to now. She is fighting a Maiden (May not be using her powers), but even then, Cinder had trouble fighting a Maiden with her lackies. I am really disappointed in Weiss' Fighting right now, she seems too set on trying to summon and leaving herself open.

Excited to see Qrow and Raven duke it out though.

Everyone stood around and watched fights at stupid times and it is not like both members in the fight stopped to watch. Best example is Mercuy/Yang fight Yang stopped to watch Cinder throw and impale a spear into Wiess and Merc stood there and did nothing instead of like a proper bad guy charging and getting a cheap blow in from behind.
