Volume 5, Chapter 11: The More the Merrier

RWBY: Volume 5, Chapter 11: The More the Merrier

Ruby, Weiss, Blake, and Yang are each entangled in journeys of their own, but they all share one destination: Haven Academy. Whether it's the promise of ancient relics, mystical maidens, or simply more power, it's clear that the stage for the next great battle for Remnant has been chosen. The question is, with so many players in this game, who's going to come out on top?

Watched this and noted that Cinder hit Weiss off center.  My heart jumped once: "She might survive it!"

Then my heart jumped again:  "I have to wait a week to find out!"

Hate to sound like a broken record, but the video player is still skipping. Buffering isn't able to keep pace, either. (Nor does it seem to matter if the video is completely prepped; skips continue to the end.)

    That aside, good episode.

It might end up revealed that there was plotting between Oscar/Ozpin and Qrow off-screen, but it is kind of strange that Qrow appears caught off guard by Leo's treachery.

At least now, with everyone having someone to square off against, we might be able to see what makes Qrow and Raven so dangerous; since they no longer have to take into account the safety of others. I'm not expecting a Cinder vs Ozpin level of epic, but if ever there was a good chance to show off the siblings it'll be in the next episode(s).

With Cinder mocking Juan and gloating, safe to assume she's gone back to full-evil. And Emerald is ever faithful. Gonna be interesting to see if Ruby can kill someone who isn't a Grim (Both Mercury and Emerald have killed people in the past, so they won't hesitate). It'll also be cool to see how much skill Emerald has in using her Semblance in the midst of a fight. They showed a bit in Cinder vs Autumn, but she mostly served in support, or to attack. Never at the same time, like she did here.

Vernal's chakram are sweet. I understand trying to divide the fight into individual match-ups, but these two are so different in terms of power, skill and experience that Weiss never stood a chance (I mean, her summon and ice got destroyed in single hit. That puts Vernal's power above an Atlesian Paladin, the advanced ones of Volume 3).

It would be nice to see what Hazel can do, but I doubt it'll be this fight. No matter how much Nora and Ren have improved; Oscar/Ozpin's initial reactions at the sight of Hazel leaves very little room to doubt that there is absolutely nothing the duo can do that will harm him (Hazel). I know he's had very little dialogue, but everything about Hazel demands attention. He's not violent, yet he's in league with Remnant's equivalent of the devil; he's gigantic (and it's not for show), but he's not brash or flashy; he speaks plainly, and yet every word carries gravitas; he's respectful, nevertheless unmoved by personal feelings. More than Tyrian, or Watts (and because Neo is missing), he's probably my favorite villain of RWBY, currently.

Oscar/Ozpin vs Leo I doubt will be a very flashy fight. Leo's weapon is kind of underwhelming. (A slingshot/shield?) But hopefully we'll learn how it all began; Why Lionheart initially turned his back on Oz. What caused him to give up? Or was he always a coward? And maybe we'll see if Ozpin can forgive a traitor who sent nearly every huntsman and huntress in Mistral to their deaths.

And just when Juan couldn't feel any worse, angry, sad or horrified about the situation, Cinder does that. Hope his Semblance involves some kind of healing other people, because that looked painful.

after re-watching this and watching murder of birds reaction vids. i felt that he was right about being volume three all over again. this is just me tho so don't think of it much but..

this whole episode IS the whole volume 3 in one go in my eyes.

starting up the scene with a different view of the 1st episode location till meeting up with leo, gives it "the first step" vibes.

then comes raven. the "new challengers" vibes.

and during that talk between her and crow is exactly how the "brawl in the family" should be.

when ruby tries to talk it out with raven, we get a team STRQ flashback vibe like in episode 4 of volume 3, "family".

tho i couldn't get ant "never miss a beat" vibe in any of this episode but i guess that chapter wasn't much for me to gawk at anyway.

still, when cinder comes out from the portal, it does feel like the "fall" ending shocker, all over again.

when cinder explaining how leo is WAAAAY in on helping to the fall of beacon.. its basically the flashback episode of "beginning of the end"

then.. well.. jaune.. (props to miles luna's awesome VA) is a fucking "destiny" vibes all over again.

so that lead to a fight scene where everyone is up with somebody. its a lil pvp moment callback. just as intense.

the scene where hazel walks in and bloody adam is outside, kinda give that "the battle of beacon" is starting.

and during the fights is where "heroes and monsters" vibe came back to me. i mean ruby and leo trying to talk it out with ozpin/oscar and emerald, is kinda like the roman and ruby on that ship scene to me.  "its not about what i had to gain, its that i cant afford to lose" thing coming out from emerald and leo?

and of course.. the end of the beginning vibe is how wise is in THAT FREAKING SAME POSE!!

    damn..

    well just my thought anyway..

    XD

    WARNING - SPOILERS

now that we have that out of the way

one of the first things i did when weiss got speared is figure out where that would be on the human body. based on the shot at 15:02, the shot is very likely either liver or right lung. so based on human anatomy, that blow is fatal without medical help, and even then, survival odds are pretty low. that being said : Jaun looked ready to SNAP before the fighting started. assuming his semblance acts similar to an MTG planeswalker spark, that will almost certainly trip his semblance. and going off RT people stating we have seen Jaun's semblance previously, my best guess is the healing seen in season 1. so if this activates, weiss will very likely be saved. the other side of this could be he goes complete berserker mode and tears cinder and crew a new one. or, possibly the best scenario, he backstabs cinder, killing her, and then revives weiss with semblance. but i doubt it, as that would be too easy.

edit:upon further review, i am noticing multiple team members down, possibly unconscious. jaun, if you have a mass rez in your back pocket, now is the time. you aren't bound by the same rules as Anduin, cast mass rez in combat! you won't get suspended, bliz has no power here!

I don't usually comment this much, but does anyone else hear the whisper-chanting right before Weiss get's impaled? It sounds to me like it's chanting "sem-blance" :0 Jaune?? Either that or "slim-juice"

its a strong possibility, though i heard "xaxas", but i know thats from WoW, not RWBY. jaun, if you have a mass resurrection ability up your sleeve, now would be the time... that said, i doubt they would actually kill of Weiss, she has title character armor - not even the plot assassin can penetrate that! not without killing the show anyway...

Weiss was so invincible in the first and second seasons. How could the creators reduce her to someone that relies an awful lot on her summoning techniques? I mean, I do get it's a powerful and very helpful ability, but she managed just fine without it during the first two seasons. Having this ability should have enhanced her as a huntress overall.

And Ruby "and her number" was so contrived.

    • 6thsilver

Considering what Weiss has been dealing with throughout this season, I think her reliance on the Knight summon is warranted. Especially now as she was fighting someone who's practically a demi-goddess as far as I can guess in terms of the powerscaling in RWBY. If she seems to be out of her depth this season, its due to her facing opponents and situations that exceed her calibre (i.e. not CRWBY's fault).

Basically anything Ruby said during "her number" besides something along the lines of "Team RNJR attack!!!" would've sounded contrived; that tends to happen when you're trying to convince someone to not screw you over, or kill you and your loved ones (Raven was intent on doing both).

This episode was just awful (and I am not saying that because of the Weiss cliffhanger, which just feels like a cop-out to me). At the risk of repeating the same complaints as others, RWBY is disappointing now. The fight scenes, the plot, the character development... all have been going downhill since Season 2, IMO, as if they traded the heart of the show for (what most people would consider) a decent animation style and merchandising. I used to tune in every week on pins and needles to see the next great fight or see what would happen next; constantly telling friends to watch it. Now I skip it for several weeks, watch it when I have nothing else to watch, and could care less about the characters because the plot seems predictable. I certainly don't recommend it to people anymore. I hope RT can recapture the essence that was Monty's RWBY. /rant

I'm so emotionally detached from the show now. I really don't even care if Weiss dies. It was fun, happy, exciting, now it's just so dark and gloomy and depressing. The entire show is depressing. I don't think that's what Monty wanted when he created this.

Really awesome episode. Love the introduction to the bad guys with the portal and stuff :)

Small Nitpicking: I don't  like the fact that J's "final swing" into nothing knocked him essentially out. Before he blocked and fought like crazy but then he just tumbles and lies down.
Or at least, why did C stand up so much faster than J in that single moment? Just feels off to me - and I know they do this all the time in movies/series, doesn't make it better for me :)

*Sitting here desperately trying to think of ways Weiss might not die*

Ummmmmm...... It was a fire weapon, so the burn might have cauterized the wound, which means she might not bleed out? .....Hopefully. I'd say that maybe the location of the wound isn't fatal, but I don't know enough about human anatomy to know if that spear could have hit a vital organ. I really really REALLY hope Weiss somehow lives! I could even deal with it if she ends up with permanent damage, just PLEASE! NOT! DEATH!

From an anatomy perspective, looking at it in a screenshot and considering her small frame, it appears the spear hit and shattered several ribs (probably ribs 11,10,9), the liver, gallbladder, lower and part of the middle lobe of the right lung (which could lead to a pneumothorax or hemothorax), and parts of the diaphragm. This also means the muscles in the region of intercostals, external and internal obliques, and possibly part of the transverse abdominus. Lastly, thoracic nerves branching out around the rib cage have been severed along with fascia surrounding the outer region of the thorax.

So in summary, her right lung has probably collapsed, the space is filling with blood (and leaking out of the wound entry/exit points), there is probably internal organ injury, fractures of the bones, severed nerves, muscle ruptures, and she is experiencing the worst possible pain in her life along with difficulty breathing. While it does apppear to miss major arteries which is fortunate, her only way of survival is if a trained medic shows up in a few minutes (like 3-4 minutes). Basically, death is extremely high at this moment.

By the way, I call shenanigans!!! She holds one of the letters of the title of this show, and it wouldnt make sense being called "RBY" or "RRNJBY" so someone better show up.

lets take a look into the mind of cinder. After almost getting stabbed in the face by Jaun (who is now under her foot) instead of killing him she decides to kill someone else, she then instead of killing Ruby, who happens to be her enemy that she has been trying to hunt down, who in that scene is ON THE FLOOR OUT COLD VERY NEAR CINDER, chooses to take a javelin throw at Weiss which isn't even guaranteed to hit.   I think that thing that took her eye at the end of season 3 also messed with her brain.........a lot.  (Also Jaun is kind of an idiot for trying to go for a stab instead of a swing, a stab would be easier to dodge and swinging would have made cinder duck, which would have ended in the top of her head being chopped off, or lean back, which would have resulted in her face being removed)

    • ubermandan

Cinder was at Beacon, where Juane's crush on Weisse was a pretty well known secret. Since Cinder had her "disciples" watching and spying, she would certainly know whose death would be the most devastating to the boy who had just humiliated her.

    • EntityXD

But she still has no reason to keep any of them alive, to prove a point or not,

    • Gofigure75

She has other plans for Ruby. When I watched this scene it just made sense. YES, Ruby is on the ground, but Cinder's mission has not been to kill Ruby, but to capture her for other plans. Its why Tryion showed up in Volume 4 (he was ordered to capture the "silver eyed girl") and Qrow vs Tryion scene happened.

Weiss in that moment was down on the ground, aura depleted, and not even paying attention due to fighting Renall. Cinder doesnt see Juane as a threat by any means. As she said, "You're a failure with a death wish." Why waste time on someone you view as inferior? Also what better way to get back at Juane than to hurt someone he cares about (which is basically anyone in that room).

So which is worse, taking excruciating pain as you die a slow death? Or watching someone you care about suffer excruciating pain and die in front of you being helpless to stop it? (Cinder doesnt know Juane's ability ;) )

This episode was an embarrassment. It was bad enough when you reconned Ruby to being unable to fight unarmed, but now apparently NONE of them can fight and they're dumb as rocks. "We know Lionheart is setting up a trap, so let's walk into it. Oh look, our enemies. Let's stand around and talk."

I assume then that you are one of the writers then? In fictional media, characters sometimes survive what would in reality be fatal wounds; conversely, they also kick the bucket for seemingly innocuous abrasions. We have literally no clue as to what will happen to her.

Can Ozpin at least do something beside watch his children die? It feels like that's all he is doing besides helping out Oscar. I know they want to keep a low profile but come on. I was expecting some Oscarpin!

And unless Jaune does his semblance next chapter, I will be entirely disappointed in the writers for not using the opportunities they had during that fight. I was so ready for it.

That was tried on Dynasty back in the 70's (the entire season turned out to just be a dream) and on Roseanne in the 80's or 90's (final season turned out to be just a story typed out by main character Rosanne Conner after the death of her husband).

In both cases, fans were FURIOUS when they found out that they had been duped, and the only show I've seen do it since then was Family Guy, a 2 episode show that turned out to be a simulation. At the end, Brian and Stewie were actually mocking the premise of shows doing that.

      It's a series killer.

Well, the show probably wouldnt end there, then they would have a totally new plot to work with after the old one runs its course

Ruby wakes up in her bed in the real work with sweat on her brow, She takes a deep breath before getting dressed and going downstairs to eat breakfast.

Technically from the shot it doesn't look like Weiss was hit in any vital spots like, you know, the heart. So there's still a chance that she can live, she just needs some serious medical attention.

And because of the weapon the wound should be cauterized so there would be no bleeding. That's if CRWBY sticks with this logic.

So I'd be fine if Jaune could heal, as long as he can't bring people back from the dead.

EDIT: Actually there would need to be a limit. Like a time limit. He can't bring back Pyrrha, it's been months and she's decomposing. If it's fresh like with Weiss, maybe.

What would be really cool (although improbable) is if in the premire of season 6 cinder dies ( for reasons i wont tell you due to spoilers) and her body evaporates into ashes but they reasemble into the person who the maidens powers rightfully are....pyrrah

I would have loved if they had cut Qrow's "I guess I was wrong" line. Then it'd be:

      Q: "We're not family anymore."

      R: "Were we ever?"

Q: "I thought so..." (or, alternatively, "I used to think so")

Sounds way cooler and not as corny

Pyrrha wasnt his fault. She had a suicide mission he tried but she sent his ass away. Against cinder... he had no chance tbh

Honestly, I was expecting more from him. He almost looked like he was gonna do his semblance or something for a sec.
