I love you, RT.

The animation improvement was really on display in this episode!  Blake's reaction to Sun's idea of what she was doing was so well animated!!  The cell shading is also even better.  When the sun was setting and Blake was leaning on the ship's rail, I involuntary said "Wow" aloud!

And Barb's voice-acting was top-notch, as usual!  When Burni--I mean, Yang's dad--walked in, Yang's "Hi, Dad" was great: Melancholy but with a touch of the playfulness that a healthy father/child relationship would have.  Totally on point.

    Oh, and one other thing:
cybernetic arm! AGGHHH!! LOVE IT.  I also love that you guys didn't draw that out for a long period of time, since it had already been established that bionics were commonplace.  Having Yang without an arm for a long period of time wouldn't have made sense.  I'm so glad you guys brought it into the picture immediately.  Now, having her reject it (for what I'm hoping is only an episode or two) makes sense.  She's still adjusting to the loss.  Being without an arm for a bit will help her if her new arm is someday damaged.  But it'll be interesting seeing her get her shit together and finally put it on.
<3 you, RT.

First off, I'm really digging Blake's new outfit. That was the one thing that I've been hoping would change during Seasons 1 - 3. Her clothing from Season 2, Episode 4 "Painting the Town" was way cooler than her standard stuff. Second, I'm actually starting to like the new animation more and more. Her ears can move now and the facial expressions are just right.

Now the fight was absolutely over-the-top. As though physics got slapped so hard it decided to sit in a corner quietly for this one. I hate to complain about that sort of thing, or act like I'm blind-sided by it. Anime in general (and RWBY is no exception) laughs at physics all the time. It's just - with this one, anyway - there was pretty much a choir singing "Wha?" in the back of my mind. When it gets to such a point where the audience is asking, "What? When? Where was this level of OP-ness last season?" You're kind of stretching the limits of acceptance. Ruby and her squad have been out of the school for less than seven months, right? And they weren't even fully trained/educated at the time of their departure. While Ruby's peformance seems appropriate - with experience clearly being a better teacher - it's like Blake went into a hyper-bollic-lion-tamer chamber during that same time and now she's better than any of them. Sun, on the other hand, seemed more believably scaled.

I can't help but ask: How many fangirls squealed during Sun's beach photo shoot?

And, again, we have a dual-narrative being set-up: Ozpin's dead. Or is he? Even though Salem defended Cinder's actions it seems she can't accept or understand Ozpin being gone. Just one more instance where Ozpin's true nature, whatever it is, gets a nod without anything being said about it. Who or what is he? (I'll post my theory in the reply section.

Also, I think someone needs to call Samus in. That's clearly a baby Metroid.

    • Kerisato

This is a bit of a doozy and might be incoherent at points but if you've got the patience for it please enjoy: My Ozpin Theory.

Ever since his reveal, Ozpin has been a mystery. He appears to be no older than other teach / authority figures in RWBY ( at times, he looks much younger in comparison to the likes of General Ironwood, Professor Port and even Glyndal Goodwitch) but he obviously is the one they all look to for guidance. Even General Ironwood, despite his attempt to undermine Beacon's Headmaster, appeared sincerely afraid when it was revealed what Penny was in Season 3.

It's been hinted, repeatedly, that there's more to Professor Ozpin than meets the eye. Even when talking, seemingly reminiscent, about himself in Season 1, Ozpin tells Ruby he has made more mistakes than any man, woman, or child alive. And, I that very same episode, Professor Port tells Weiss that he's trusted Ozpin with life and never once been led afoul.

Then, in Season 2, General Ironwood confesses to Glyndal that he has trusted Ozpin for so long and seeing his friend hesitate causes worry in the General. This, of course, was following Ozpin's open rebuke against Ironwood's desire to send an army to investigate an area outside of Vale - reminding a commanding officer of the military force about the basics of warfare. And, in the conversation with Ms. Goodwitch, General Ironwood's reply to the reminder that Ozpin was no more informed about the true nature of the threat than they were was to say, "That makes it worse." Conversations like that seem to reinforce that the other Professors at Beacon, and huntsmen abroad, were relying on Ozpin, not as a kindly schoolmaster, but as someone with far more influence and power than his position might imply.

During Season 3, Qrow, one of Ozpin's friends, reminds General "Jimmy" Ironwood, that he was only aware of what was happening because Ozpin wanted him to be in the know. Clearly, Ozpin called the shots, yet Ozpin appears no older than Qrow. Adding more intrigue to the mystery, Qrow later told Ruby and Yang that Ozpin and he were friends from way back. Qrow's not much older/younger than Yang's mom - in fact he was in the same squad as Tai, Raven and Summer Rose. So unless Professor Port and General Ironwood were taking orders from a teenage Ozpin all this time it really calls into question exactly how old the Professor actually is.

Next there's his office. The main viewing window was a giant grandfather-clock like Big Ben. The floor of the room was filled with constantly rotating dials and cogs beneath a sheet of glass. Near one side of the room was a boxed off area with plainly visible, rotating, over-sized gears. And even Ozpin's desk had rotating gear and cogs built into it. Maybe it was just artistic choice, but the steady ticking of those gears indicate (at least to me) that either Ozpin likes old clocks and the sound of time keepers, or he has some tie to Time. Don't forget, his ensign IS a Cog and Gear.

Moving on, there was the fight with Cinder. However short-lived, it was incredibly action packed and (I feel) kind of showed what top-notch huntsmen were capable of. Ozpin's strikes against Cinder were far faster than anything she visibly returned with. In fact, for the most part, it appeared she was on the defense. But there were two sequences which stood out the most. The First is when Cinder melted the floor and threw the pieces at Ozpin but when they came close Ozpin dodged them in a manner similar to how the agents evaded bullets in the Matrix; he appeared to move in several directions all at once, while remaining in one place. The Second is when Cinder launched that final attack. Ozpin never bothered trying to evade. Instead, thrusting the cane into the ground, he created a field around himself. But watch carefully when he stabs the ground and hunkers down. Notice: His symbol, a cog and gears, appears all around him in a circle, just like a clock. I doubt it was a shadow cast by some light overhead since all the power went out just prior to this fight (when Cinder shot Amber) taking the lighting out with them. And when Ozpin launches into the air the circle is more clearly visible.

Finally there is Salem. Her opening dialogue at the beginning of Season 1 is actually far more tone-setting than I first thought. It goes from a history recital to an ominous warning which Ozpin, at the end, counters, 'Or perhaps what is needed is a more honest soul.' At first I didn't think much of it but when Salem speaks at the end of Season 3 it becomes a more personal message filled with mockery; she even tells Ozpin - who is supposedly dead - that it's only the first move and she will win the war they've fought and everything he tried to do will burn. Later in Season 4 she congratulates Cinder for killing Ozpin, only to later question Cinder in private if that is indeed what happened. And, as if disregarding Cinder's reply, she murmurs to herself, "What are you planning?" It's as though Ozpin's death was either unexpected or a ruse - a technique that was all part of some grand plan.

And she's not the only one. At the end of Season 3, Ruby asks about Pyrrah to which Qrow responds solemnly, "She's gone." But when talking about Ozpin, both with Ruby and earlier with Tai, Qrow sound not so much grief-stricken as concerned, saying, 'Ozpin is missing' but without any of the sorrow expressed when confirming Pyrrah's fate - despite having a long friendship with the late Professor.

So what does all this mean? Two things: Death is, apparently, final in the world of Remnant. Even the maidens die. While their power can move to a new host they are still gone forever. Ruby's mom, a silver-eyed warrior, died possibly when facing Salem and her council (as Hazel mentions, 'We've dealt with their kind before.'). Huntsmen and Huntresses don't seem to have a long lifespan in general. But when discussing Ozpin's disappearance it's considered abnormal; for him to vanish suddenly alarms everyone but no one concludes he's dead. Only that he's gone.

This is all conjecture and some fandom but, considering the respect he commanded, his abilities in battle - specifically the repeated flashes of a cog and gear on the floor whenever clashing with Cinder - I think Ozpin's Semblance has something to do with Time itself. Can he control Time? Or travel through it? Probably not, or else he might have stopped Cinder the first time (no pun intended) when she attacked Autumn.

However Ozpin's Semblance does include some kind of Time manipulation. Maybe everything range of that cog/gear shadow which followed him around the Vault is subject to the manipulation technique. If so that would explain how he could react and move so quickly against Cinder, and possibly might even show why Cinder was kept on the defense; she was trying to escape its reach. In fact his style, rapid close range attacks, would be appropriate if that were the case.

Going further, I'd guess Ozpin can use his Semblance to such a degree that he is able to move himself out of the timeline along with all circumstances, persons, events and actions within that Emblem/Shadow. It might be a sort of trump card. A last ditch survival method.

I feel this last one is particularly important because war which he and Salem have been fighting, clearly, is not something they've been waging within a natural lifespan for humans. If so, Ozpin and Salem might have been locked in this war since possibly the conception of the Four Maidens (remember, he did tell Pyrrah that story was around since he was a boy) and Salem may be even older (I actually wouldn't be surprised if she were the origin of Grim.)

I suspect that Ozpin has been using his Semblance to stay alive through the ages while training new guardians to take his place. This would give his final words in Season 1, Episode 1's monologue added meaning: "Or perhaps what is needed is a smaller, more honest soul."

Or it's possible he's just really long lived, ages slowly, moves at supersonic speed and I'm just overthinking it. Anyways, that's's my rambling theory.

So, in response to your Ozpin theory, which I actually read all of. I think you're on to something there. I also think Oz has lived for a REALY long time. But, here's my theory. Rather than a single life, what if Oz actually 'dies' but is then re-born into someone else? But completely aware of his past lives and abilities? What if he could even control to some degree who he is reborn into? If this is the case, then Oz showing up inside of Oscar would make sense. Oz knows he is needed immediately, so instead of being reborn as an infant he joins a younger boy who can communicate already. The down side of this is that he has to share a body with someone else, but the plus side is that he can communicate with his generals and share information. His generals (Qrow, Ironwood and Glenda, for example) would know that he would be reborn, but not as who or where. So they're thinking they might have to wait a couple years and hold things together until Oz shows back up. Meanwhile, Salem is thinking she has a couple years to get things under control until Oz gets old enough to fight back again, not realizing that he could choose to be reborn in an already semi-adult person. Another theory is that, when Ozpin 'dies' he becomes incorporeal and latches on to an appropriate host until he gathers enough of his energy/aura to regain his body. Which would also create a situation like the one above with the generals and salem. Either way....Oz is coming back! YAY!

While im loving the attention to detail and the character development and little things like the subtle change in eye size and facial expression based on emotion (not to mention blakes adorable and expressive kitty ears ^_^ OMG SO CUTE) I have one MAJOR complaint about the series so far... THE FIGHTS!.. they feel weightless as if the weapons and people using them suddenly dont apply to the laws of physics and gravity any more.. sure i get jumping high and what not, but they still at least felt like there was an appropriate about of weight to their movements. In short... there going for the whole "weightless fly in the sky" fight style.

I agree from an initially-watched perspective.

At first, this was all too weak for fights RWBY has delivered in the past,..

But this isn't the first scene where fight physics have been thrown out the window for dramatic 'Punch"

S4 Ruby teaser is stacked with it and no one wet their pants on that one.

But I keep watching S4, and the previous seasons, over and over; and have noticed the same thing since my initial addiction was plucked,..

In context, the fights are smooth and bold. Under a magnifying glass, they are perposterous and silly.

So I just relax and watch it again, then realize,.. 'Damn, this is AWSOME!'

(oh Yeah,.. I absolutely LOOOOVE the looks on Emerald & Merc's faces when the Grim messenger drifts on by.)

I don't understand how Yang could get this Demoralized. If anything i would think this robot arm would make her stronger. But inb4 her mom pays her a surprise visit and convinces her to get back in the fight.

ALSO i feel like Sun is going to have to play the stereotypical "Boyfriend proves himself to the father to get the Girl" role. and we are going to get more backstory on Blake. Maybe she will get more confidence.

Weiss is most likely going to be home mastering her semblance and skill, as well as either making some sort of agreement with her Father. It is clear that they don't see eye to eye, and that her father is commanding, but i think she will either find a way to make him let her go out to her team. Or escape on her own, maybe with her siblings or Ironwood's help.

While I don't mind that Blake gets to converse with a stranger. While looking glum as possible while in a very public space seems to me that she wanted to bait someone to talk to her. That's just me.

Also, when she discarded her bow. I'm confused on why the there was a need for her to talk to herself. It's clear that she's letting that sense of insecurity go. It's a bit like that movie Equilibrium, when a element in the story was just shown and stated. Just pretty distracting, mostly for when it comes to later rewatching of the series. Well her talking to herself could be included on how emotional she is as character.

What I just said with Blake on her displaying her issue is address by the point with Yang. Her being adjusted to the change in her life as well as a form of PTSD on the Yang's broken spirit.

Side note: I appreciate that the series is cutting out the middle man one front for the drama of Yang getting a prosthetic limb from the get go. So the limb isn't the issue, it's the memory.

Back to Blake. I would have enjoyed the moment of Sun's return when it's been spoiled by the intro. I'm indifferent to a moment that could have had some serious punch.

For the boat, I do like of how the ship wanted to appeal as a cruise vessel. Without the need to make it look like a battleship of some kind.

During the fall of the fight, I would think that Blake would use her shadow clone ability in an attempt to distort the aim of the Sea Dragon. To improve her chances of not being targeted while being on the offensive.

On the moments when the characters stand or are positioned in certain ways. I cant help but feel like those moments are used to later used as screen capped images to be converted into memes. Similarly to RWBY chibi. I'm neither for or against it, I just hope it doesn't become a big thing for the future.

Blake has always done that throughout the series, with the whole "runaway" thing going for her during Volume 1 and the dance thing in Volume 2. You could also tell by the end of the episode that she wants someone (in this case, Sun) to understand her, but always acts like no one can.

I like the faster pace of this fight scene. I can't wait to see how they push the boundaries of this new animation. How they and the characters move forward and progressively get better.

But, I really can't wait until RNJR, Weiss, Blake and Yang reunites, trains, gets as good as the girls from DEAD FANTASY and counterattacks against Salem.

Need an epic free-fall battle as well ^.^

Really? Most people are criticising the fight scenes (myself included) the fight scenes for being amateurish and stilted.

@chyerbrigade I've criticised the fight scenes this volume pretty hard myself, saying that it's "like the new animators have never seen DEAD FANTASY, Monty's biggest point on fight choreography was about using the weapons and environment in efficient and interesting ways. Having little to no wasted motion or energy, while still looking cool."

That being said, the fight scene in this episode is a step in the right direction. How Blake uses the boat mast to gain momentum.. how Sun uses the rocks to run from the Grim... Still not nearly as well choreographed as Volumes 1 and 2 or Dead Fantasy..(And parts of Volume 3 that they used Monty's resources/animations).. but that may just be a testament to the sheer skill Monty possessed.

Not to mention they still seem to rely on their semblances for movement a little too much. Ruby flying around in the air non-stop... Like Blake's shadow clone was always a decoy/mid air booster that could either take a hit for her or propel her just a little bit faster/further while already in motion. It swinging her around seems like it doesn't fit the core attributes of the ability. Sun's could be written off as we haven't seen it much, therefore it could work like that.

As I've said Before though.. these animators are doing amazing things with the Facial expressions/tonal elements in the dramatic scenes of this show, that i could never dream of accomplishing. So much better than in previous volumes. The visual storytelling though body language is on point this volume. Again, to all the people at RT... We don't just love Monty. We love all of you as well.

@garlicavenger The Vol.3 facial animation is as good as it needs to be and spending more time on the idle animations is definitely a good idea but spending more time on making it prettier or changing the art style is just a waste, especially when time could be spent on better choreography for the fights.

We shouldn't be praising RT for taking a step in the right direction when they take ten steps back, the fight scene's are boring and the new art direction is pointless, the story is fine so far (hard to tell three episodes in) and the music is still good.

I still like RWBY I just hate to see something with so much potential go to waste.

@chyerbrigade yes then we are in agreement on all points. just to varying degrees on some. i still believe in credit where its due, but you are correct. the fight scenes now suck compared to older volumes. kinda flipped what this show is good at haha.. it used to have great fights and mediocre dramatic elements.. now its reversed. here's to hoping the new fight choreographers keep moving forward and get better as they progress.

    • Omegafire18

@chyerbrigade It's true that they'll probably never get to Monty's level of choreography, even at their best. But it doesn't do to 'just' complain about that; what we can do is accept it, and encourage them to do their best with what they can, as they're trying - it's not like they/us/anyone 'asked' for Monty to die so young, and the choreography to take a drop as a result from his loss. But even as the fights are, they do what they can to make fights cool, and they work pretty well overall imo

^It also doesn't help to judge purely by comparison to Monty's work; no one can get close to his level of talent, at least not without time... that a weekly-release web-animation doesn't really have

Whatever the Relic is, it must be in Ozpin's cane. Why else would Salem want to be absolutely sure that Ozpin's is fully out of the picture? He always kept the cane with him, and there were many times where the cane was focused on in scenes. Salem's going to be furious when she realizes that the Relic is gone.

    • DragonTurtle2

      Or maybe his coffee mug.

No really, the mug would probably be a better choice, since the cane is what he brings in to battle, so if he were to lose, the bad guy could just claim the relic right there.

The introduction of the new Dragon Grimm makes me think that either Salem is creating new Breeds of Grimm, or the Grimm are waking up from Centuries of slumber, because of the fear in Remnant.

  • SyaoranLi1337

Well, Mind Flayers exist in Remnant. That's a scary thought. Given it's intelligence and how it understood Salem, it's most likely a species of Grimm that marshals and commands the Grimm during attacks.

So I'm not sure if someone has already mentioned this, but after this episode, I'm sure everyone has noticed that Cinder is not using her left arm, but beyond that, has anyone else noticed that they haven't shown her left arm at all?  And likely her outfit with the long sleeve on her left arm and extending past her hand, isn't just for fashion but to hide some kind of injury or severe deformation (or maybe mutation???).  should be interesting to see what really happened when they decide to reveal the true extent of Cinder's injuries and weaknesses after Ruby gave her the stank eyes and cold shoulder treatment!

  • OswinFlaire

Im seeing a lot of negative comments about Salem and how she is too mysterious and we dont know anything about her, but remember the finale of volume 3 was called the end of the beginning and RT has mentioned numerous times that this show has a very long story so since Salem has just been introduced it only makes sense we know nothing and that shes super mysterious i love her (and Cinder) either way.

Also at all the people saying thats not how gravity works, has gravity ever worked normally in this show? lol loved this episode and loving this volume keep up the amazing work RT!!!

While I don't care about her being "mysterious" in fact I prefer to showing not telling in stories I am however annoyed that we are four years into this story and new characters are still being introduced. Wasn't introducing the characters the point of Vol. 1?

    • Omegafire18

@chyerbrigage Vol. 1 was more of a stepping stone, in fact part one-of-three of such

After all, I think it was said that the original plan was that Vol's 1-3 were meant to be season one. And they still are in a sense, since they choose 'Volumes' specifically because multiple volumes fit into a season. So in a sense it's like Naruto, in that there's a lot of story to go through, characters to introduce (important and not) across the seasons, and otherwise not gonna be a quick progression, but without the filler

    • Tom1351

@chyerbrigade in addition to what Omegafire18 said, remember RT are selling volumes 1-3 with the label of "Beacon", this to me seems like they are more like The Fellowship of the Ring or even The Hobbit than The Lord of The Rings. They are the "Beacon Chronicles" or whatever, and now the show has left Beacon and moved on to the " ***placeholder*** Chronicles" so in a sense it is starting something for the first time, deals with new issues, and so must introduce new characters.

If it didn't it would run the risk of being a Batman/Joker thing where Roman (and it would be Roman, no grander conspiracy means no Cinder) would turn into this caricature of a criminal that would exist purely to ruin team RWBY's day, and not act like he has any real motivation of his own, therefore dropping the quality of the storytelling.

Just my two cents. Anyway, I'm interested: why is it you think that new character introduction should have stopped by now? I just want to know what your side is! :)

Is it just me or does Cinder's scar on her face looks exactly the same as Amber's? Inheriting the Fall Maiden's powers might have transferred Amber's wounds to Cinder which is why she's unable to speak.

crazy theory. the relic she is talking about collects the essence/Aura/Soul of the dead at moment of death, if its in beacon that explains why Pyrrha turned to magic dust but the huntsmen in ep 2 just died, same with all the other bodies there.

I don't think so otherwise everyone that died at the end of Vol. 3 would have also turned to ash (Penny not included), it was probably just cinder using her new found powers to turn Pyrrha into cinders (hehe).

who else is seen die on screen? also could be super close range thing (hidden in his office maybe)

    • chyerbrigade FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold

I'm guessing a boat load of civilians turning into ash is something that Qrow or anyone else would have mentioned, as for range, Ozpin's office was trashed with nothing left in it.

P.S. I know Cinder got got pretty badly but if they were also looking for a relic at Beacon why didn't Emerald, Mercury, or someone else look for it immediately after the fall.

P.P.S. The decision to add another thing for the antagonist to look for is really dull, right now they

have had their first major victory now I want to see their plan move forward and to see them fuck  some shit up.

for the most part i agree and this is just a wild thought so its probably never going to happen. but it was only the very top of the tower that was smashed and Emerald and Mercury still get attacked by grim (which beacon is now overrun with)
