Good stuff. I never thought about the technological level of Remnant. That they're taking time to explain it may be indicating that such factors will play an important role in RWBY.

They have yet to evolve their Network Infrastructure to our levels. So, they wouldn't have redundancy features of The Net. Our networks systems were originally designed to decentralize informationto keep it from being destroyed by tactical strikes or strategic mesures. That, has evolved into an "always on" system of back-up servers and redundant failovers to ensure continuous access to critical information (even that gets strained when RT posts a new Chapter of RWBY).

They basically have the equivalent to our first trans-atlantic signal system, except they can send more than just a radio Morse code signal. What their current system configuration does is deter one Kingdom from taking out another Kingdoms long range communications as a means to invade. Because they would take out their own communications along with the other 2 Kingdoms. It's not just Poetic that they all play nice. This asset offers the lowest cost to highest data retention and reliability for Trans-Continental messaging.

They are probably about to find out why, even in peace time, this is setup is a bad idea. To be honest, they probably never considered the systems would be taken down by their own. So, until that happens, who could justify the cost of running a system similar to ours? Also, the short range system (within the Kingdom and immediate surounding areas) might still work even though the long range system (CCTS) is taken out. Theoretically they could use it to form a network or relay to another Kingdom's short range system; but The Grimm would probably make short work of something so open and unprotected.

Sure Cinder's Party could destroy the worlds CCTS by taking out one of the towers, but couldn't they fake a signal for the Beacon Tower and use that time to take over Beacon's CCT instead? If the CCTS just drops off line, that would bring the other 3 (2 actually, because Ironwood is already there) Kingdoms running to investigate. But if they could at least fake the Beacon CCT signal long enough to prevent the system from crashing. They could launch a Coup d'├ętat and no one outside Vale would know until after the new power had seized control. Then when Vale is under new managment, the signal is switched back to the Beacon CCT announcing their presence to the World of Remnant.

Oh boy, the foreshadowing is real :( so the black chess virus piece that cinder has installed into the cts of vale can probably knock it out, not only does she have access to ozpins desk and ironwoods scroll, but now she can probably disable all the cts, which matches up perfectly with the event of the downfall of yang, because the last moment of the esp shows the grim picking up a huge signal from the vital festival because of the shock of what yang was tricked into doing by now we know to be emeralds semblance "see newest episode", cinder will bring the grim to vale, then cut off the cts rendering vale defenseless. no wonder cinder, Mercury, and emerald, along with neo hitched out in emt nurse outfits fleeing again in a ship, typical of cinder to fly away,

Then there's always the question of what does cinder plan on doing with the penny vs Pyrrha fight she's scheduling, a. Cinder will take away Pyrrha's semblance since its polarity so that she is no longer seen as invincible like she said she would in volume 2 or b. Cinder wants Pyrrha to use her polarity on penny, which would make it look like she killed penny because penny is magnetic and Pyrrha can control magnets :(, and give away that penny is a robot will scare people, and it will give away Pyrrha's secret of her semblance on national cts!

Both are equally troubling to think about, especially since I <3 team JNPR

It could be that the planet's (I don't think it has been outright named?) "life-force" is what keeps dust active, like in a spiritual kind of way. But you could also look at it from a functional point of view, like it needs the oxygen in the atmosphere to react properly. Pretty interesting bit and it only took about 5 secs of screen time ^-^

As a Computer Engineer, the lead network architect of Atlas needs to get some serious bitch-slapping and/or have his degree re-certified. A ring network is not the way to go when you're trying to keep 4 continents connected.

    Looking forward to more episodes.

I'm theorizing that, either eventually or soon, each of the girls on Team RWBY will become the seasonal maidens. Weiss will be the winter maiden, because "white snow" makes one think of winter. Yang will be the summer maiden because she's "burning hotter than the sun in the middle of July." Blake will be the autumn maiden because--and this is a little bit of conjecture--the first place we ever saw her was in Forever Fall, so she is most readily associated with that season. And Ruby either will be or already is the spring maiden, because flowers are always thought of as a springtime plant; it would make sense if she already was the spring maiden because that would explain her question of why Ozpin let her into the school early.

It just seems a bit convenient that there are four girls traditionally imbued with the powers of the four seasons, and the show just happens to be named after and primarily about four girls. But again, it is merely my theory, and we will all understand more as the show progresses.

While I see the connections you are making. I hope the line "there will be no victory in strength." from Volume 1, episode 1; turns out to be an overriding theme in this series. Because Team RWBY is not the strongest, they have the freedom to go on an epic adventure to defend what they think is right; with the "normal knees" that they have. If anything we have seen this in Vol. 2 (Dance dance Infiltration) everyone that Cinder figured to be a threat, was on her list and being watched. Because Ruby was not on Cinder's list, she was able to intercept Cinder in the CCT. This (almost the best, but not quite) quality is what allows them to be interesting and relatable, at least to me.

If they go turning them into living goddesses with ultimate powers, then where does the story go from there? If, on the other hand, they continue to grow and fight and overcome obstacles and situations that are complex and overpowering. Well, there is no secret as to which option I would choose, but your opinion may vary. With all due respect.

theory: Well we already know the winter maiden "Winter" Weiss' sister. I'm trying to determine if maybe the reason the Schnee's specifically have had summoning pass down and it's such a special semblance and hereditary is because maybe they have always had the winter maiden in their family and perhaps they can slightly use a lesser version before they inherit it. (maybe each mother has thought of their daughter when they die, if winter dies maybe it will pass to her sister Weiss) also we know Summer was at one point Summer Rose most likely. I would say this is evidence for her being alive because i think it would have passed down to Ruby if she had died(unless that's Yang's power or maybe it is Raven giving her time travel or whatever with those portals). Spring is a mystery to me. Perhaps when Qrow is speaking of a villain in the episode he fights winter when he says "i've seen the things she's made" maybe he isn't talking about Cinder. Cinder doesn't really "make" things. Perhaps spring can grow beings similar to Grimm or grows regular Grimm herself from ashes. Maybe she is even Cinder's mom. She wanted Cinder Fall to become the fall maiden so she had her attack Amber but only stole half the power. No mods

All i get from this is cinder is able to make the beacon tower go "offline" or destroy it, which will eventually make the others go down, hence making it easier for grim attacks, and any other plans she has.

Although she is getting a lot of info from it so she might leave it.

But now with grim being "called" to beacon it would be a good time to destroy the beacon communication tower.

Can that be a part of cinders plan or am i making something out of nothing?

    • zeffy101

I was thinking that too but again its up to Cinder if she wants to use the towers or crush them maybe she might use them and then discard it when she doesnt need them anymore.. or as a distraction to keep Ironwood occupied if the towers fall.. who knows anything can happen this series can make multiple outcomes

Dust doesn't work outside of Remnant's atmosphere. That feels very significant to the origins of Dust. Or maybe not it's origins. A theory I have right now is that Dust is useless without Aura, maybe that means that Remnant has a global Aura which let's it be used as an energy source on Remnant. But if it leaves Remnant, then the global Aura doesn't work and Dust becomes useless unless a huntsman or huntress infuses their Aura with the Dust.

But that's just a theory. A RWBY theory! (That I came up with after little thought)

Then again, we've already seen how much these guys suck at computer network security...

    • zealousNihilist

You're applying the logic of your universe to one in which you know very little. I mean, you're here watch videos trying to figure it out. It's an incapability of technologies across universes.

So, as for why all their technology is powered by dust, we have little evidence that other types of fuel exist. For instance, no examples of fossil fuel within the series. It could even be that dust itself comes by means of breaking down what was once organic matter. The entire universe functions on laws that we are not yet privy to. Even then, should things like coal and oil be present and viable as alternative resources, it would take time to adjust. As we have even seen with our own space travel technologies, our means of transportation and fuel use are extremely limiting, yet look at how long it is taking us to adjust? The need is not great enough for our universe or theirs to propel either into massive spacefaring technological leaps.

Then, with the issue of having a system which will break down at the loss of one relay, I agree it seems a little odd. However, I do not yet know how the system functions. The key may reside in the fact that the system of communication breaks down, but no one ever said the information is lost. The servers which contain the information may very well be separate from the relays which connect the various devices. The smaller relays may exist, or do exist, to boost the signal of the four distant towers and cannot, by themselves produce such a signal. It stands to reason then, that regardless of why, whatever system is in place requires such a large amount of something (power or an unknown source like, for whatever reason, a maiden), which again we are as of yet not privy to, that only these large structures may house it. The loss of one structure breaks a link between systems, the smaller relays not having anything to boost therefore providing no connection between servers.

I can still see some flaws, as by the looks of the map, some of the large towers overlap and could possibly still communicate even with the loss of a more distant tower. These are simply gaps I am trying to fill with the little information we are given over the course of one three minute video.

I would argue about their computer network security. I'm a computer programmer and the easiest way to break into any network is to have a direct physical connection to the system. If you are familiar with the hardware and have the right equipment, you can force a computer to bypass the password of you have access to the device as it powers up.

Cider did have to get passed all those guards to get into the system after all, so it wasn't like the network was unprotected. You simply can't defend every location that needs protected from someone of Cider's skill all the time. And once she got physical access, she was able to install her sleeper code that gave her the back door that she needed to start gaining control of the system.

It is likely that the only way someone would have found her code at that point would have been shutting down the CCT tower and going over the code with a full team of developers. That would likely take weeks, and doing that right before the Vytal festival would be a disaster.

Also at the time, didn't they think Torchwick was behind that attack, and he is currently locked up.

Why fix what isn't broken? They've never needed to use anything other than dust simply because of its various forms. Also, I have suspicions that Penny is the result of shoving a human soul into a can.

maybe their world doesnt have coal/gasoline/whatever is used to make rocket fuel.

i mean, from the first episode/the first world of remnant i cant remember, the ONLY time humans were remotely able to fight back was with dust, which makes me think they werent able to make weapons-etc.

also, maybe all the weapons are just like Plastic, and it is only Aura and Dust that makes them strong, they use Dust in all of the other things.

Regarding fuel, we know for a fact that Remnant has water, therefore it has hydrogen and oxygen, therefore it has rocket fuel.

As for the CCTS, I'm not talking about information being lost, I'm talking about the whole system going down due to the loss of a single node. The internet can self-heal, if one router in the system goes down then the routing algorithm will start redirecting traffic to different nodes and as long as the failed router wasn't at the source or the destination then a new route will eventually be established, allowing the network as a whole to recover. Seems very strange to me that there would be no resiliency at all built into a system that's so vital. Sounds like a limitation introduced for the sake of some future event of the story more than it sounds like a natural part of how the technology would work to me.

Christoph405 made some fair points, it is easier to compromise a system you have physical access to, but the way the implanted malware is spreading suggests that there's not any networking security at all in any of Remnant's computer systems, not even the military ones as Cinder has apparently gained control over Atlas' mechs. It's even implied that they've managed to get control over Penny. Don't they have firewalls or anti-virus software or IDS equipment? Has nobody in the history of human civilisation on Remnant ever committed computer crime before?

There's a maxim in creative writing, "it's easier to get your audience to accept the impossible than the improbable" and I'm sorry, but this communication/networking system just seems very improbable to me, as does the idea that there is no kind of fuel at all other than dust. We've already seen the girls camping around a fire, and it was a fire made of firewood, not dust.

I wonder... could that be a part of Cinder's plan? Her virus would possibly shut down the Vale CCT tower, thus isolating it from the rest of the world while she enacts whatever plan she has?

Worse than that, it would knock out the entire CCT network. The video states that there's zero redundancy or capacity for network self-healing.

That would lock everything down with all the Kingdom, plus, how would Cinder's team work without the Towers? It would be a double edged gambit seeing that if it does work, they can't access all their resources.
