When horsepower meets clean power Anyone that knows me can confirm I am a serious fan of auto sports*, which at times creates an impasse with my other convictions. After all, its hard to justify a fossil-fuel chugging ground-rocket in an age of global warming and an ever-deteriorating foreign policy situation.
So when I heard that Volkswagen is bringing a clean diesel to one of my favorite race events, you can't imagine my joy. Especially because the vehicle in question, a Toureg, gets only marginally better gas mileage than a Hummer H2 out of the factory. Of course, the race Toureg is heavily modified to not only deliver more torque than a conventional farming tractor but do it using severely reduced carbon emissions.
Diesel racing is nothing new. Old-school diesels have been flying through the mainstream Euro circuits since the 1970's, but the addition of clean-diesel is pretty recent. And what's just as important is the race itself. The grueling Baja 500 and Dakar Rally are done across rugged desert terrain where only the most die-hard of engineering platforms survive. And Volkswagen has a good record on these races. If they can pull off another win in a "clean" engine, it basically proves to American manufacturers that their slow start on the econo-car movement can only be blamed on themselves.
The fact that Detroit is on the verge of bankruptcy probably says it better.
*note: "Auto sports" does not include NASCAR, which any real gearhead will tell you is a bastardization of the automotive engineering industry. Maybe more on that rant some other day...
