Fucking Academia Okay, I don't post this type of stuff often at all, and it is really blogworthy, but I've been having some serious doubts about the path I've chosen.
I've been studying for a multimedia degree for about three academic years now with aspirations of building art, music and other content for games. The thing is, in those three years (of a five-year program), I have yet to study anything that is related to my major, or that I don't already know.
My instructors are either completely focused on the art for art's sake aspects of the major that they fail to coherently impart practical knowledge, or seem so utterly clueless on the programs they're supposed to be teaching us that I wonder how they ever got their positions. ("why won't this broken dock alias launch? I'll click it five times, then call campus micro support!")
I have to have a college degree. There is simply no room in this crowded industry for those with ideas but no piece of paper that says they're capable. The thing is, I'm so utterly exhausted with academia's bullshit that I'm ready to throw it all down and strike off on my own with the knowledge that I'd probably pump gas or flip burgers for 60 years before I died.
What should I do? I'm honestly stumped.

Right now Rob Dougan's Furious Angels. I'm sure I'll forget about this for a couple of months then come back to it and laugh at my taste in music. Either that or be nostalgic. |
