Howdy there my fellow fan dude,

I noticed your comment on another guys picture of the USS enterprise in orbit of a planet, you said you don't understand the ships design. Well my friend, your in luck! I am just the right nerd to explain it to you, OK, take notes! First of all , in space one need not worry about aerodynamics obviously, no wind, so a starship can theoretically be any geometrical shape and function fine in space, so why not do it classy right? Now the "saucer section" the top of the ship, this part of the ship IS designed with aerodynamics in mind, it was made to glide and belly land in the event of a ship wide emergency (rent Generations the movie to watch this happen) the saucer can separate from the rest of the ship and carry the people safely away from the rest of the ship before it explodes, now, the "secondary Hull" is the bottom half of the ship, includes the neck and the lower body, this is designed to house the ships main drive, the warp core, a very dangerous but powerful engine as well as all the science labs and utility controls of the ship, ect. think of the secondary hull as the business district of a city where everyone goes to work, the saucer section is where everyone lives, all the crew's quarters are in the saucer section, so think of it as a huge apartment building in a city. Now, that blue glowing dish you always see in the front of the secondary hull, what the hell is that you ask? It is the ships main "deflector dish" think of this as a large "bumper on your car", you see in space, there are many small particle's and tiny or large asteroids, comets, or even what is called stellar dust, this small little objects are moving so fast they are like bullets flying around space, if one hits your ship, it can blow a hole right through the wall, or do serious damage to the ships systems, now when the ship is just flying on impulse engines (thrusters) all it needs to protect from these dangers is the ships energy shields which wrap the ship in a invisible protective bubble, but when the ship is traveling at warp speed, it is going much to fast for the shields alone to protect it from these space obstacles, so that is when the deflector dish comes into play, that blue disc sends out in front of the ship an invisible beam of energy like powerful static electricity times a thousand, this wide shut gun sized beam spreads out wider and wider as it moves away from the ship and the energy repels and push's away any space objects or debree the ship might have in its path, to avoid collisions, ever try to make 2 magnets that have reversed polarity stick together? they push each other away right? its sort of like that.
Now the "warp nacelles" those 2 large cylinder shaped objects that always stand out away from the ship, this is how they work, the literally 'warp space" around the entire ship, by this I mean they slice into what is called "subspace" think of space as a vast ocean for a minute ok? when a large ship travels through the water it divides the water by cutting into it with its hull and the water moves around the ship so the ship can pass through it moving forward, this is called a ships "wake" well that is what is sort of happening here, think of the warp nacelles as 2 giant surf boards which are gliding through the water carrying the ship along with them, the surf boards need a wave to move right? well that is what the warp engines do, they make a energy wave which the warp nacelles glide across, allowing the ship to reach extremely fast speed's, such as the speed of light itself. So? does that make it seem more logical to you now? pretty clever design.
